Not difficult but quite expensive, the bits for these gearboxes will run to several hundreds of pounds if you were to replace gears and syncros, plus most of these older Corollas have been raced or rallied at some point, lol You will know that from being in Ireland, I think most Corolla AE86 & AE92's end up there

Kingo

Its not always the worse case, although the Gti 16's only real weakness is clutch wear. It may not need a new box or synchros. Did you look at the clutch fluid level? If its low then there will be problems. ;)

Hi guys, I'm a noob..... bought an AE92 a couple of months ago(upgrading from an '89 GL) in gunmetal grey (or whatever it's called) on a '91 plate with 63k on the clock, bodywork needs attention(usual places, around the sunroof(anyone know where I can get a new sunroof panel and tailgate? any helps appreciated!), arches, tailgate) Recently I have noticed that when changing into 2nd from 1st in the high revs and 3rd to 2nd it is crunching and makes a horrible grinding sound. Doesn't generally happen in the low revs. Do you think I have a box problem? or just clutch and gearbox fluid running low? I thought it might be the syncro, but wondered if you guys have any input?

I've had this problem with the box on my 4A-GZE. Redline MT90 gear oil helped for about 18 months then I had the box refurbished earlier this year. Synchro from 1-2 and 2-3 were shot. Not a cheap option but at least it now works smoothly and it was warrantied for 12 months. While the box was out it was an ideal oportunity to also replace the clutch.
