Oil Consumption

Hi All,

I have a '97 1.8 ST that's done about 108K miles. In 6 months over the summer the engine has used the rough equivalent of travelling from the top the the bottom marks on the dip stick. What's that, about a litre or so?

It doesn't have obvious smoke from the exhaust, some of the plugs are a bit mucky but not badly and it runs well enough.

Would you say that is fair consumption for an engine of that age?

Is thicker oil with winter coming on be any good?

Would you just live with it?

Thanks.

as long as you did some mileage in those six months I really wouldn't worry too much about it.

I have no experience of the 7AFE engine though.

alot of threads on here about this oil usage problem , apparantly its normal on that engine,TO LUBE THE TOP END, i find it hard to believe myself as i have owned alot of cars over the years and never had 1 that used any oil at all. STRANGE.

I have 99k miles on my '99 1.8 with 7AFE engine. It doesn't use a drop.

You are the 1st 7AFE owner I've heard off who doesn't use a drop. Mine uses a little bit - hardly noticeable over winter a bit more during the summer months - Toyota have confirmed that it is completely normal and it even says so in the original owners handbook, I think they quote it as using up to 1 litre per 1000 km

Most manufacturers do! It saves them from investigating and fixing x percent of cars under warrantee.

My 2003 impreza was two years old when I sold it, and it drank 1 litre per 1000 miles. That was a lot, and I found it very annoying having to check and top-up every 100 miles or so. Every other journey in other words.

My 2000 vvti, now on 40000 miles uses about 1L per 600 miles. No smoke, plugs are a good colour and it runs fine. I just top it up when necessary, so I wouldn't worry - Celicas just like oil.
