Hi All,

I have a 2001 Avensis VVTI. I came back from a 160 mile round trip today and then later in the evening started the car again and whilst driving the engine management light started flashing and there is less power! I tries switching engine off and on again but same problem!!

Is the engine about to die??? :(

Hi mate,

I had similar in my Avensis 2003,2.00 Litre VVTi.

When I did add a water to washing tank I made wet one of the sensors and I see this icon for two days.Later it has gone.Since that it driving ok but better be sure.Try check all sensors and fluids and maybe you will find something loose or disconnected.

Sorry that I can not help you more..

Cheers

Wojciech

anyone?? :(

Hi, IK1, try pulling the fuse out for a few seconds mate, then replace it and try running it again. If that doesnt work try disconnecting the poss cable off the Battery for about 10 to 20 seconds, then reconnect and run again. Either of these tricks should put the eng. man. light out and clear the fault code temporarily. If the light comes back on, then you must look into it in more detail i.e. getting the fault code read and rectified. The fuse by the way is marked ECU and is in the long fusebox. VVTI's are pain for this!! Hope this helps a bit Jed.

Thank you all.

I took the car to a local mechanic who gave me the codes (used a portable device called Launch) and the following codes have come up.

P0300 Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected

P0301 Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected

P0302 Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected

P2248 Oxygen reference voltage circuit performance (for A/F sensor )(bank 2 sensor 1)

c2b10 No description of code [0,0,6b,10], please send your feed back to Service Centre to consult and/or improve.

c1313 Open circuit in Main Relay 2

P0013 Camshaft position 'B' actuator circuit (Bank1)

P0500 Vehicle Speed sensor Malfunction

P0041 Oxygen sensor signals swapped (Bank 1 sensor 2/Bank 2 sensor 2)

He checked compression and that was o.k. The coil pack was o.k. He did an injector test and said that was fine. So he said looks like an internal engine problem. His suggestion either open the engine or simply replace the engine :o

Went to a second mechanic and he said the same...he said he has seeon so many engine problems with VVTI and D4D and he said best thing is ged rid of it as soon as possible.

SOMEONE HELP!! :(

WOH! WOH! WOH! Calm down!!!

First of all try clearing the light as suggested, by dissconecting the Battery for a minute or so.

If this is successful just carry on using the car, it may not come on again.

If it does throw up another code , take it to a Toyota dealer who will be used to this type of engines foibles. You have nothing to loose apart from about £40 for another diagnostic test.

Good luck.

bgorman, I am quite calm actually considering I could possibly lose about £1000 on this car if the engine is about to die. First Japanese car that has given me problems in about 8-9 years of my driving life.

Anyway I will try your suggestion and see how it goes. I don't mind spending £40 odd quid if at the end of it there is a viable solution. It is not worth me replacing the engine which are expensive to buy and no guarantee it will work so either way the Avensis has lost me money...hey you live and learn.
