Mmt Driving Tips

Many people seem to have problems with Multi-Mode Transmission, mainly I think because of the lack of help in the manual. Personally I now find that driving with MMT in the E (aotomatic) position to be excellent, but it has taken time to get around to that conclusion. My suggestions are as follows, but any other tips or comments would be welcomed.

1. Without exception always slip the gear lever into neutral every time you come to a stop, however momentary. I suspect that many of the reported problems connected with MMT may result from failure to do this.

2. Extremely smooth upward gear changes can be achieved by gently easing off the thottle for a moment when you want the gear to move upwards. If you do this you will find that you will make extremely smooth changes, smoother probably than you could with a manual box.

3. However I struggled for a long time with a specific couple of areas where problems arose. On going up a long hill in say 3rd gear, the gear box was sometimes reluctant to change to a higher gear when the car got over the top. It would stick in the lower gear for a long time before changing of its own accord. In a similar manner, the gear would correctly change downwards when going down a hill but could be reluctant to change up again when the gradient eased. Similarly, when you kick down to make a fast overtake - the gear could sometimes stick in the lower gear. Almost by accident I have found the answer to these difficulties. Immediately you become aware of the problem quickly flick the gear lever to the right, and straightway back again to the usual E position. You will find that for some inexplicable (and fortunate) reason this persuades the gear to change to an appropriate gear straight away. When you flick to the right do not try to engage one of the manual positions, just flicking quickly back and forth does the trick. How this works I have no idea.
