Dont remember this coming up before, if you've allready checked the obvious stuff like exhaust mounts etc

to no avail, I would wait for Anchorman's opinion or PM him.

I remember having a similar problem on the '94 RAV and it was the rear suspension bushes that had worn badly. And as has been said, it could be worn mountings on the diff. jack the rear end up, and without crawling under the car unless you puts good car stands underneath, try wobbling a rear wheel and see if you can feel any movement in the wheel. Trying to wobble the diff is more difficult so send your wife or someone you may know like the neighbour from hell to lie underneath and try wobbling the diff.

My trolley jack wont go high enough to squeeze either of the neigHbours under. So i guess I will have a good tug tomorrow at various things .

It's called a centre or mid-ship bearing. The bearing itself is supported by a rubber cussion and you should be able to feel some spongy (but firm) movement but no actual free play. If there is free play it needs to be changed. You can buy the rubber cussion sometimes but that looks like an assembly.

Ask Kingo.

Cheers

I had this bit replaced after the RAV had been laid up for a while. The garage at the time said it was almost seized and was causing very bad vibration. It was NOT cheap.

However, I have since found from Marc at The Garage that if the bearing is replaced the wrong way round (ie back to front), then vibration occurs. The previous garage had the bearing off so maybe the original had been alright.

If the bearing is worn, and from memory its more of a rotational bearing keeping the prop from slopping about, then I'd have expected there to be an out of balance type of rumble or vibration rather than a knock on acceleration/deceleration.

What about the cj as shown in the diagram??

The guy in NZ who has a RAV with the 3SGTE engine fitted has strongly suggested to me to have the diff mounts strengthened to cope with the extra power as this is the weakest part in the drivetrain. I'm not saying this is your problem but think aloud so to speak, I wonder if the diff mounts are soft allowing the prop to have worn the central mount.

The central mount comes a 1 complete part, altho Parts king will confirm and give you a price. If its easy, I'd maybe change the diff rubbers as well.

hope this solves the problem as theres nothing worse for confidence than something hammering away underneath!

Ian

it only knocks when applying power and taking off power , once running its silent.

It's there to reduce the unsupported length of the prop shaft which would otherwise suffer from "whip" under load. It will clunk as you take up the drive and release it as for the rest of the time you have taken up the play but be warned that it will eventually cause a vibration as the shaft gets more out of line and if it fails all together you will end up with the whole shaft flailing about under the car.

I've known prop shafts almost total a car and if it digs in the road the car will leap over it lig a pole vault.

I'd attend to it if I were you.

Right then, happy Monday morning!

Centre prop bearing 37230-42010 is 123.52 retail, TOC price inc delivery is 116.74

Diff mounting 52380-42071 is 85.26 retail, TOC price inc delivery is 84.22

Both prices represent 15% discount, but added 10.00 for TNT overnight delivery (Both require ordering)

I meant to ask how many miles the RAV has done - my central bearing was replaced at 160,000 miles and had no trouble before that, apart from the rear suspension mounts which I think were replaced around 90,000 miles. At that time I was having the same clunking, but it was the entire rear suspension that was moving and the clunks came from the forward mounting points. The garage at that time said it was a wonder that the rear end had decided to hold onto the car ! (I think his comment was a bit OTT!)

I said the central bearing was expensive did I not? *****, I could buy 10 bottles of whisky for that, even after Parts Kings generous discount.

yours has 2 more doors , therefore 1 extra clonk . :P

i dare say it'll be 1 of the mounts like the wifes. check the rear springs for snaps at the top and wishbones too though.

tilting the rear seats can make the sound a bit more audible to locate also.

At the kind of low mileage you mention, I'd take a guess its the suspension mounting rubbers getting old and perished (a bit like myself)

I believe one can buy polybushes, although up to now, I haven't found a supplier for my '94 RAV 3 door. I saw them available a few years ago so maybe they are available for more recent RAVs. Then again, as I said its done 160,000; laid up for 2 years and the last change of rubbers was around 80k miles or so. Maybe around 7 years ago.

I feel another change happening soon as the guys have had the RAV out with the KAD 6 pot caliper brakes for road testing. With the additional power. it jumps about the road a bit "like a bouncy castle" The adjustable shocks will be adjusted to tighten up the bouncy bit and spring assisters as well.

We are also going to double check that the suspension bushes have not gone soft again - I think they have!! (Wheel alignment as well needs checked so as we take off down the runway, we don't go tunneling down the grassy sides.)

as regards your shocks, they can easily be checked for fluid leakage. You can also check the rubber bush at the top of the shock from removal of the plastic panel on the rear inside wheel well plastic covers. There shouldn't really be any play here but if the rubber has deteriorated then it could have shrunk/compressed and either need tightening or replacing. This might give you the impression of clunks in the rear compartment cos the sounds will reverberate around the rear wheel well which is not very well sound insulated.

Konis etc are available for the rear. Also, the front shocks can be replaced without replacing the whole strut like Mr T says. The strut comes apart using spring compressors and undoing the large nut - altho a subtle tap may be needed to loosen the shock from inside the strut but then this is another thread!

Another thing to check is the springs on the back - are they in 1 bit or have they broken near the seat cos I had that problem with the Previa.

If all else fails, I run a loving home for old RAVs.

Can swap you for a Humber hawk needing some loving attention??

I forgot to say that I think I will be in Newcastle later this week and can have a run by (for a laugh).

Whether I have the rav or the propane powered Trafic will depend on how we get on with keeping the RAV wheels on the ground!

N by the way, the advantage of running propane is that if you run out of gas, after a Curry vindaloo one can fa*t into th tank and away you go for another 100 miles!!

Thats where the Proclaimers got the idea for the song

"I will run 500 miles.... and I will run 500 more"

SHOWER OF PANSIES.............

Wots a few clonks between pals??

Ma new RAV6 is being road trialled (Dave watch out) and is currently the liveliest thing in Motherwell (no offense intended dave)

The GT4 intercooler is part installed and we still try to find a roll cage template for a 3 door as the 5 door disnae quite fit. Hooever, we've solved the green environment lobby as the beast hops down the road on 1 wheel due to its 300bhp (ish)

Tomorrow sees the adjustable shocks racked up the stiffest setting and see where that takes us. The KAD brakes are immense and the 18" alloys are .............

As far as clonks goes, the machine is still attached to the transmission and running gear.

Once we have it behaving reasonably, I'll take a video and upload it onto a new high speed server. Today has been horrendous as I switch our main computer over to a quad core 4mbRAM 1.5TB box. Unfortunately the old box had all but given up.

Next step is to shift all the emails over to the new rackspace server, then set up the websites. By which time she who has been ignored will be back at work and I can get on with things quicker.

I'm going down the track of changing the login to jumpingjackflash.....!
