Britains Most Practical 4x4

Hi all, well it seems to be that time of year again when the 4X4 mags do their tests. The one I get, Planet 4X4

has done the practicality test. Hmmm, side opening rear Rav door ? did not think it would do too well. But it

seems this lack of a spare wheel situation may have a plus side, in the motoring press anyway. Overall winner

was the Discovery, but heres the results for the 5 seaters-

************Marks for 5 seaters are out of 90********* edit.

Lexus RX 350 73 points :toast:

Volvo XC 70 70 points

Range Rover 70 points

Range Rover Sport 65 points

Volkswagen Touareg 65 points

Jeep Grand Cherokee 63 points

Audi Allroad 63 points

TOYOTA RAV4 62 points :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Kia Sportage 61 points

Nissan Patrol 61 points

Nissan Murano 61 points

Porsche Cayenne 61 points

The Ugly One 60 points

Subaru Legacy 60 points

Kia Sorrento 59 points

Nissan X Trail 59 points

Dodge Nitro 58 points

Skoda Scout 57 points

Skoda Octavia 56 points

LR Nedflander 55 points :blush::blush:

Subaru Forrester 52 points

Nissan Qashqai 48 points

Jeep Patriot 47 points

Plus a few others, cant be bothered mentioning.

So I think we Rav owners done good considering the HEAVY company we were in :thumbsup: so hats off to the 4.3.

A great result considering the cars ahead of the RAV are generally in a bigger class of 4x4 and more expensive. :yahoo:

Dave, what sort of things was the mag looking at for this practicality test?

Fuj, I should have mentioned that the 5 seaters are marked out of 90 (will do edit) the 7 seaters are marked out of 100.

test criteria-

Methodology

marks awarded out of ten for front seat, rear seat and cargo bay practicality.

Measurements

Front seat measurements are taken with the seat fully back and down, thus you see the maximum available leg and head

room. Rear seatmeasurements are taken wth the front seat positioned to accomodate an average-sized driver. To do this,

we set it so theres 100cm from the brake pedal to the base of the drivers spine. Where the rear seat slides, we measure with it fully back.

Notes

Key factors we looked for include.... Front: Seat and steering wheel adjustment; visibility from the seat; size and quality of

stowage areas; provision of amenities such as reading lights and electric sockets. Rear: Leg and head room with the front seat fully back; visibility from the seat; size and quality of stowage areas; provision of amenities such as sockets and rear

air-con vents. Cargo bay: Ease of loading and of folding seats; flatness of floor with seats folded; provision and usability of

ancillary stowage compartments; provision of amenities such as sockets, cargo nets and lashing rings.

The Rav scored 7/10 for front seats, 6/10 for rear seats, 8/10 for cargo area.

Verdict- The most flexible Rav 4 ever, but despite a well thought out cargo bay its let down by disapointing rear seat

accomodation. Its ok for young families but wont grow up with you.
