My son just telephoned from Spain. Brand new RAV4 HAS JUST DEVELOPED A FAULT . Lost power and can only do 10 mph. Warning messages say

CHECK 4X4 SYSTEM

CHECK ENGINE SYSTEM

CHECK VSC SYSTEM

He wants URGENTadvice on likely problem and should he book into a hotel or could it be just a control chip which can be fixed easily.

PLEASE ADVISE.

Had a similar problem with US model V6 - this was down to not properly reseating the fuel cap after filling up, and a minute amount of air ending up in the system. Wasn't quite so limited in the speed I could get out of the RAV though. It eventually cleared itself as I recall. Although I did take it to be checked out by a dealer it had actually cleared the problem by then.

I guess by now you have formed some kind of recovery plan but it sounds like it has defaulted to limp home mode to protect itself from harm. It is almost impossible to speculate without knowing the DTC's from the diagnosis kit.

You can sometimes clear a spurious fault by disconnecting and reconnecting the Battery but if there is genuinely something amiss it's hospital I'm afraid.

Good luck
