Hi,

Had my xtr d4d nearly three weeks now but I notice sometimes when I go from 1st to 2nd it feels like there is a bit of resistance there, it's almost like changing gear without the clutch being fully deppressed. Any ideas please. it dosn't do it all the time though!

thanks

Nige

Ah. Well ye see Raggy, trying to change gear wi the passenger holding onto to your knee has a history of getting notchy changes.... I'd ask your GP for advice on a knee implant. Then again you haven't mentioned your age.

Jealous from Glasgow.

Hi...

I kinda get a clunk sound sometimes when I place my rav in 1st and also at times when I'm wanting to reverse the gear wont kick in, I then try again and at times it just dont want to play...Thinking of taking me rav in to MR T to get looked at as on top of it I have an annoying rattle in the front passenger door

So when I get a chance I'll contact them and get an appointment....

Rgds

Never noticed any resistance when changing up from 1st to 2nd

Slight resistance going the other way, down from 2nd to 1st but personally I feel it is speed related. From my experience, if you change from 2nd to 1st when the car is stationary the resistance goes, so I can live with that.

Sorry can't help anymore than that.

Never had any clunks from the g/box or any trouble find reverse either.

Good luck Nige and Rob

Yes, mine is the same, although it seems to have eased a bit with age.

Hi guys, as I remember there has been a couple of threads on this allready. My own Rav, a 4.2 does this and it seems to be

quite common. Something to do with the synchro on 1st and reverse I believe.

Notchy gear changing with the 6 speed box is well documented here so don't worry about it (although some are better than others). It is surprising as the box is very sophisticated with triple syncros on first and second so I wonder if the synchros slip in the synthetic 75 viscosity oil. Mayby 75W90 would be better but while they're under warranty you can only change it at your own risk.

Fixing the door rattle is easy, I've shown it before but I'll do a maintenance tip for it as a seperate item that can go in the folder.

Regards

Anchorman.....TOP BANANA as usual.... :cheers::toast::yahoo:

I look forward to seeing the door rattle fix...it aint half anoying when on the road and then hearing it go...only tends to happen when at approx 50-60mph...

As for the gears ... have you come across the clunck issue when placing in first gear...does'nt happen all the time...

regards

Rob

ah weel -

you should try removing the door as its an unecessary added weight.

As for the synchro issue, I think its a fairly common thing with many manual toyos. I'd try the NHS and see if ye can get a leg extension - left leg job would be useful in pushing the clutch.

Of course you could try a paddle change but you'll find that accelaration is slower as yer paddle skites accross the tarmac. (spelling errors added in courtesy of mugglesengland.co.uk)

Thanks for all the replies.

I think perhaps the easiest option would be the leg extension!

Nige

Aw but ah wis only kidding!

But if it works let me know and I'll patent the idea!!

Bothy

You worry me sometimes!

Stay off the moonshine - there is plent of choice for pukka stuff up there.

However, I cannot disagree that taking the doors off will undoubtably fix the rattle and sure enough reduce weight.

I wonder if thats how Steve gets such good fuel consumption?

I had same problem with my 2 year old 3 door rav D4D and took it to be looked at at toyota and they said all is well with it, i think it is as said earlier a synchromesh problem.I found if u keep the revs up a liitle bit as u change gear it will disappear.

Cliff.

Womble

That actually does work but it takes a bit of getting used to.

It's a long time since I heard of somebody doing it, was it something you learned from the Institue of Advance Driving? I'm not in but I think it was somebody who was practicing that first told me about it.

Hi the Potter

It is easy, just leave tha accelerator pedal down a fraction early as u use clutch to change from 1st - 2nd

I only have this problem from 1st to 2nd or 3rd to 2nd, it dosn't do it all the time but I'm pee'd off that I paid £19,000 for a car with a gearchange similar to my old Daewoo Matiz!!

If you are that unhappy with it, go back to your dealer, after all it's a good wedge of money you handed over to them.

I'm sure they have a XTR in the showroom, ask them for a test drive in that car and see how that feels.

In the end, be prepared to reject the car.

Hi raggy,

Ive never been ecstatic about my gearchange either but it will get better with use, try a slower gear change and use the engine torque to accelerate rather than high revs between gear changes, I find that helps.

my wife drives the car more than me and as never complained about the gear box mind you she had been driving it for six months before she realised it as six gears (so thats nowt to go off)
