Good morning All

I ‘m going on my holiday with my family to Europe and I was going to buy Roof Rack and bars to fit, but I do not know what to choose and what will be suitable for my Avensis 2003.If anybody can recommend some good and not very expensive roof rack…

Is it possible to fit this myself or not?

Thanks

I have the Paddy Hopkirk version from Half*rd's on my '98 Avensis. It is easy to put together the 1st time and takes a roof box with no troubles.

You can identify the correct locating points by looking at the roof edge where it meets the window frames. With the door open you will see a slight indent in the line of the roof on the underneath of the lip. Measuring from the top of the apertures these are approx 8" back from the windscreen and approx 14" forward from the rear window on the saloon model.

My only criticism is that this type of rack can distort the roof slightly when tightened and make the sunroof tight to operate. It comes back to normal with the bars removed.

My wife's 'rolla has factory roof bars, which are a perfect fit but if you only use them twice a year then the £70 difference isn't worth it.

With the Half*rd's version at least you can buy replacement feet if you change the vehicle so that you don't waste the whole set of rails.

Hope this helps.

BTW - if you have a liftback model check the rear mounting point distance and the amount of overhang for where the roofbox mounts. I tried to fit the long thin roof box and the overhang stopped the tailgate lifting and nearly smashed the glass. I ended up exchanging it for the short & wide version instead. So no bike rack on top then....... :(
