Flip-up Lights

Hey, with my car off the road for the moment i guess its time to start doing the little jobs that i havn't yet had time to do. The one thats bugging me most is the fact that one of the flip up headlights (1989 ST185) either doesnt come up or takes ages, then its a hassle getting it down again. Iv tried my best to change out the old wires going into the motor but no change. Is there a chance that the motor itself could be dodgy(if so where could i get a new one and for how much?) or could it still be a wiring fault. Would be thankful for any help as i dont have much of a clue about electrics :ffs: , cheers

Sounds like the motor may be about to die, though could be worth oiling the pivot to see if that eases it.

If it does die, then if you're stuck you can wind it up and down manually from underneath the car. There's a rubber boot on the bottom of the mech that you remove to reveal a bit that you can turn by hand to wind up or down. Just a thought - I wonder if the boot is missing on yours and water's getting in? If that's the case some WD40 might help?

You can get parts from Mr T but price will probably be shocking - just the little rods that the motor pushes to lift the light unit are about £12 each IIRC, so a motor won't be cheap by any means. You can also get complete assemblies on eBay. Colour shouldn't matter as you can fit your own cover to one off a car of any colour. I've seen them go for as much as £50 but more usually they're £10 or £20; I got one for 99p recently but postage was about £10 ;)

Good luck.
