D4d Cooling Fan Not Working

Hi

I don't know if any one can help but my 2001 D4D Avensis cooling fan doesn't seem to be kicking in when it should, i was towing up a bank the other day & the car started to overheat, i looked under the bonnet & even though the temp gauge was almost in the red the fans were not going.

I have since tried connecting them via a direct feed & they work ok, they also work when the air con is on. I have found the fan temp swich on the radiator & disconected it, this does not make the fan run as suggested in a different post, i have also tried connecting the two wires together that come off the switch but still nothing. Is there a relay or fuse that could be causing this or does anyone have any other idea's?

Regards

Steve

Connect a direct feed to the fan from the Battery. (couple of bits of wire will do - but be careful you don't short the live to the bodywork!!). The fan on my 2000 Avensis had burned out. The fans unfortunately supposedly sealed units and cost £175+ from the dealer. I was able to open mine up. One of the brushes had fallen from the spring arms. Simple repair with Epoxy resin putty.

These units can sometimes be swapped between similar models if you can't find an exact match from a breakers. Mine for example was similar dimensionally to a Carina E which I would have fitted had I not done the repair.

That said your aircon fan should have kicked it??

Hi

Thanks for that but i don't think the fans are at fault, i have already tried connecting them to the Battery & they work, also they kick in with the air con

Hi

I'm still having trouble with the fans, the car is working ok at the moment but when summer comes it will be overheating again, up to now I have connected the fans direct to the Battery & they run, so no problems with the fans themselves, they also work intermittently when I turn the air con on. I have disconnected the temp. sensor on the bottom of the rad. & tried the fans with it disconnected & via shorting the feed to it, still nothing. Are the fans controlled by an ecu, could this be at fault? I have also checked all fuses & relays; they appear to be ok & working. This has got me baffled please help, anyone got any other suggestions?
