Paint Quality And Thickness.

I'm interested to hear what the general concensus is regarding the paint on our T-sports and compressors.

It seems to me the paint is very thin on alot of panels and those areas that get scratched cannot be teecutted or buffed out. Is this because the laquer could be thin? or does that only apply to plastic bumpers and trim?

My car is due into the bodyshop soon for alot of changes, so i am considering getting the whole car re-sprayed properly with full thinkness paint on all panels and proper laquer coating. some panels dont need it but the paint looks very very thin, so would like a complete going over.

Bonnet seems thick but the stone chips are all over the place, so it might just not be well painted at the factory, or maybe cured too quickly, making it brittle and easy to chip.

Has anyone resprayed their car completely in the original colour or considered it? Any negatives to respraying professionally?

Thanks for any help.

I too have issues with the paint and agree with your comment's.Went to a professional paint shop,Who paint

the noble sports car's they couldn't believe how poor the paint was and that total respray would cost

around £2000 as now I'm going to keep the car I should be getting it done Jan/Feb.

HOOVER

Surprisingly, a professional respray with thicker paint will make your car heavier.............................it may well affect your 0-60 times :P ;)

actually, i polished my car up... got a nice layer of wax on there now... also got some touch up paint, to fix up the bigger dings, some of the lesser ones were filled completely by the polish actually... not a 100% solution but stops the car getting mullered on the way to work.

I'm really disappointed with the quality of the paint on my Compressor its 10 months old and has covered 12400 miles, its really badly stone chipped, i've been into the dealer who measured the paint thickness and told me its as per factory spec, so they are not going to do anything about it!!!

I guess i have to address my complaint to Toyota or have it resprayed myself  not what i expected when i bought a brand new car

Mines almost 6 years old, but yours at 10months old is unacceptable. I think the paint curing process was rushed at the factory for some reason, maybe time was a factor. My neighbour got his Mercedes C-class estate completely resprayed apart from the roof, also got the front two wings and bonnet changed for new ones and it cost him 1500. 3 Months ago. I think i will be asking my neighbours bodyshop to do mine. If it cost him 1500 to repray almost double the amount of area my car has then mine should not cost more than 1000. Will not know till i get a quote in the next few days.

LOL!, i think i'd rather be slower and look exceedingly good(LOL!!), than be in a very fast rust bucket. I could have just got a corsa instead. Actually, my mistake, 'Corsa' and 'fast' should not be in the same sentence.

Mmmm I'm just off the phone to Toyota customer service who basically said if the dealer says the paint is within the guide lines then its not a manufacturing fault. Any repair would be at a cost to me. I now have to wait for them to get abck to me

There are companies which deal with car detailing, they have the equipment, maybe even better than toyota to say wether the paint is thin or not. I think one company is autofinesse.co.uk, can't remember the link. But they charge 35+ a hour for the diagnostics. You will get the full print out of all the panel paint thickness and if they fall below the guidelines you can go back to toyota. I wouldn't trust toyota with something like this as it's in their interest to say it's within spec. Otherwise they will be obliged to cover the work which could mean they loose thousands. Unfortunately if its within Toyotas spec (however bad it may be) nothing can be done, apart from get it done elsewhere. I haven't used the autofinesse guys but was considering it as they do a complete inside and out detail. Professional level. All paint correction etc..

By the sounds of it only your bonnet is affected, possibly front bumper too. These would be very cheap to get reprayed under 200 i think. Unless you want the entire car properly painted to last you many years if you intend to keep it.

Here's what they offer:

Paint correction requires a consultation £45.00

(refunded from treatment cost)

This includes:

* Paint thickness readings and print out

* Panel test to help decide on the level of application

* In depth explanation on application and treatment methods

* Advice on future care and cleaning techniques

Paint correction £35 per hour (average 6-8 hours)

* Paint thickness readings and print out

* Machine polishing and correction work

* Stepped polishing grades to define the finish

* Polymer sealing to protect the finish

* Detailed advice on how to avoid swirls and paint defects

Good luck!.

Finally got round to asking my neighbour for the bodyshop he uses, he had his mercedes e-class v-reg estate completely resprayed and front two wings replaced for better treated parts, as the front wings for those cars were made in China and Germany, the german ones were better quality than the chinese ones,(chinese ones rusted quicker). Both are O.E, but different manufacturing process. Cost of all this was 1500 inc vat and parts.

Got a quote on my car for total respray, fit side skirts, facelift bumper, facelift rear bumper spoliers, repair damaged rear from drunk driver, paint engine cover, TTE grill and fix dents and a fold in the door where it was opened into a wall on passenger side. All for 1000. total time to take is 2 weeks, to work at a good but not rushed speed. I am supplying all the parts. All i am paying them for is labour and paint. He damage caused to my car by the drunk driver was 450. So actually very good price indeed.

I think that is a total bargain compared to some have got 1500-2000 pound quotes just for the respray. Quality of the work i got quoted for is top notch though, as i saw many Maserati's, classic AC's and lots of BMW, Audi, Benz and Golfs there when i went today.

If anyone needs any bodywork done this place will beat any prices and quality of work. Located in Park Royal, Trading Estate Road.

Same Colour, carlo blue. The bodyshop specialist noticed an area that had been resprayed aswell, the paint had run very very finely. So the whole thing is going in next wednesday. Hopefully they will finish before 2 weeks, i can't wait. The car will look almost totally different, complete facelift rear, new front, side too's. The only area i am not touching is the roof. Although i may get that done too, i have to wash the car this weekend and make a proper list of any and all damage i see, so i can add those too.

Carls SR: I saw the pics of your car, very nice. May i ask how much it cost you to paint your engine cover? I asked my paint specialist today he said he would do it, but it won't last long without cracking. Have you had any problems with yours?

Thanks.

AWWWWWW NO FAIR. You can't keep things like that a secret :(

LOL!, that made me smile after the day i've just had.

Was getting my car ready for the bodyshop tomorrow so took my car home to empty all the contents. I had to run a quick errand so i took the merc. Within 5minutes some old fool had driven right into my front right hand side just infront of the wheel. Literally ripping off the whole right hand side and everything with it.

<Rant> What the hell is wrong with people. why can't they just LOOK where they are driving? So in the last 2 weeks 2 of my cars have been hit by careless people.

And both cars are out of action now. Just left with the 3rd merc. :-(

I don't know wether to laugh or cry but the car that hit me today was a Toyota Avensis Estate. Not even a scratch.

Fed up with the drunk drivers and OAP's that can't see beyond their nose driving into me. </Rant>

LOL!, it could well be, that i even don't know about.

What is strange is i've held a license for exactly 10 years to the day. For the first 5 years of my driving career i was completely accident free. My first accident involved hitting a fox at 75mph while passing by Ealing Common around 5am in pitch darkness in my pug106 (streetlights dont work there). My only careless mistake.

2nd Accident 1 year later was rear ended in the pug106, driver blamed it on her high heal shoes. I wasn't moving and was stopped at a zebra crossing,

3rd Accident 2 months after the 2nd was hit on a round-about in hertfordshire outside the galleria. Hit and run, hit me so hard the pug spun 180 degrees in the dry. I was facing his car and even managed to see his face, number plate everything as he sped off.

That was the end of the pug. It just couldn't take anymore abuse from others.

So i've been happily driving my two mercs for the past 3-4 years with no problem at all. And the T-sport for over a year.

Until 2 weeks ago got hit by a drunk driver in the rear . 4th accident

Today got front ended by an OAP in the merc. 5th accident.

Pretty much not a lucky driving career. Everytime i have been hit i've been stationary apart from the 3rd accident, i was doing 4-5mph. Only once was it my fault and that was very stupid.

It might be better to be driving all out, then people won't daydream as much when they see/hear something powerful coming their way. As defensive driving doesn't really work, for me anyway. Infact everytime i;ve been hit i've been really relaxed behind the wheel. When i'm driving around like i've stolen it i have no problems at all. People 'make' room rather than drive into you.

Hey guys heard back from Toyota GB they have basically stone walled me and say that the dealer has confirmed that the paint is within manufacturers spec and as such they do not intend to rectify the problem.

They went on to say that there is no problem with the paint thickness/quality, when i pointed out the complaints on here i was told these type of forums encourage complaints!!!!!

It was even pointed out to me by the female who started to speak to me as though i was mentally challenged (really slowly pronouncing every word) that the contract for purchasing my car was nt with them!!!!!!!!!!

Not a happy bunny next stop Toyota GB complaints department
