Hiya folks

I need your help.

Ive got a 1994 uk celica.

Usually the car is upto operating temp within 5/10 of mins of driving, but recently its not, the temp guage doesn't even move off cold even after 45mins to an hours driving, the blowers only blow luke warm if that, but if i sit in traffic for 5 mins the guage moves to half way as it used to. Then when i start driving again it goes back down to cold.

The car is also running like it is cold, very julty, slugish etc.

Any help would be appreciated, if yiou need anymore info please ask :o)

Very strange. It's rare for problems to result in a car that's too cold; overheating is far more common. My first thought would be a problem with the temperature gauge.

If it's really running too cold, then it could possibly be that the thermostat is stuck open; but even then I'd expect it to warm up much more quickly than that. Alternatively, I wonder if the fan is perhaps stuck on constantly, that might explain it. That would be fairly easy to diagnose - just run the engine and see how quickly the fan comes on.

Testing the thermostat is a little more messy, but worth doing.

Good luck.

a small clip that holds the thermostat spring down will of come off , leaving the thermostat wide open all the time.

very common problem with the celica. make sure you goto the dealers ( £18 ish ) or at least get a blue print part.

let the car stand on tick over , i bet you the guage reads normal within 10 mins and the blowers are red hot. start driving and the on comming air/wind passing over ther radiator will cool it down within a minute or 2. also what happens is it gets cold again and the choke/cold start kicks in , causing more fuel to be added and making the car run lumpy and it eats the fuel.

have someone look at the thermostst though , chances are its in bits wobbling all over.

hello to the black forrest btw.

My 6th gen GT mostly runs Cool-ish (which I'm slightly amazed by really) - the needle's typically around 1/3 of the way up - it tends to stay like this throughout the drive and only creeps up to just under half way when standing for some time at road works etc - when back on the move it usually lowers back down to 1/3. Am not sure why it runs so cool though.

the gen 6 usually stays at half way no matter what , untill the fan kicks in maybe it goes to 3/4.

maybe you need a new stat , could be opening just a tad early , or maybe its the coolant you have in the water system .

in times of old in the winter motorists placed some card board or if you were posh a piece of chip board in front of the radiator , this would reflect the wind and keep the car hot and get hot alot quicker.

I have a similar issue at the moment, I am running a gen 6 and my temp gauge is at around 1/3 to bottom of the scale whilst driving, and heats up to half way when in traffic etc, however the heaters are always red hot, not that I am complaining!!

However it seems it doesnt run sluggish, but drinks fuel and LPG! Could this be related to the thermostat as well?

A car must be running at normal operating temperature to get best performance/MPG If the car is running cool/cold it is usually the thermostat stuck open, quite common on a lot of Toyota's, as mentioned previously, get a genuine one, the last thing you want is a cheap one that doesnt open properly and boils your engine!

KIngo

Thermostats sold here, as well as everything else

i have owned a st202 also a st205 ( oh the memories) :D

both ran at exactly halfway,as i said if it opens a degree or 2 early it will always remain 1 or 2 degrees out.
