Rough Diesel

I purchased an ex-demo Verso D4D TR some three months ago. Since then I have clocked up a large mileage and had an excellent fuel economy. Last week I had it serviced (10000 miles) and a new windscreen fitted. The engine now appears to be as rough as a bear's ***** and knocks badly when cold. The temperature has dropped in the last week but the noise is sufficient to give me a headache after a long journey. Are all these engines so unsophisticated or have I bought a pup. I thought that with Toyota's reputation I was taking little risk. The car was purchased from a Toyota dealer with the three year warranty. Am I just having a winge after buying, what appears to be a down market car after my 8 year old Volvo, or do I have a genuine problem that I can go back to the dealer with. (he is located 90 miles from my residence)

I would suggest you go back to the dealers! I have a D4D and of course its not as quite as a petrol engine car but when you are driving and when the car is warmed up you do not notice it at all.

You say you will have to travel 90 miles ? you can take the car to any Toyota dealer for them to have a look at ! do you have one closer ?.

The 10,000 mile service is a pretty minor one and( oil and filter change etc)I cannot see what they would have adjusted to cause any problems

if its really noisy when cold its most likly to be an injector fault which is common on the diesels at the moment

Thanks for that. Knowing nothing about diesels, it feels as if the injector timing is out as it is making a loud pinking noise at certain revs when cold - just wondered whether the demo people had done more serious damage.

There is another dealer 15 miles away. I will give it a bit longer and see what happens as the weather goes cooler.
