K&n Typhoon V/s Mpg

I am thinking of getting a K&N Typhoon kit after reading some of the K&N Typhoon conversions threads... it's been said a few times that having the kit fitted improved the fuel consumption... more power and 'roar' for less! Is that so?

Would be good to offset the insurance premium hike  ...

I have about the same fuel consumption after fitting my KN Typhoon kit.

It depends on how you drive it also after you've fitted the typhoon or similar. Because of the increase of noise most end up using lift more often.

Mine went up, it takes a week or so for it to adjust after the ecu reset, but once everything has bedded in, some have said an increase of 3-4mpg with the same style of driving as before the kit was fitted.

I wasn't that happy when i had mine fitted, even did 3-4 resets, which was the reason why my fuel consumption was slightly low at first, but now it's excellent.

Arms, How easy is it to do a ECU reset? Sounds troublesome.

CHeers,

Mac

It's very easy. just unplug the Battery for 20-30mins. Then replug and the ecu should be reset. Will take a few days to bed in afterwards. There are lots of posts about the reset and different methods, but this is the easiest.

Thought you could reset the ECU just by holding down the clutch when the car key was turned (but the engine was't on?)

Hold down for 30 seconds, iirc.

If we can find the actualy method of resetting ECU, possibly make it a sticky in the mechanic section so people can find it easier, as it is a frequently asked question....

3-4mpg more once the system settles in... with more bhp and a better 'roar' :yahoo: ... am impressed and can't wait to get one fitted... have to consult direct line re: premium hike though :(

on the subject of resetting the ecu, i read some threads which confirm disconnecting the -ve end of the Battery for 30mins... and to make sure your tyres are straight [b4 disconnecting the Battery i presume] as well to avoid getting the tracking wrong...

on another subject, anybody seen some nice 'discreet' tsport decals anywhere?

aint seen any decals anywhere but i may be interested if anyone has any info.

on the subject of the typhoon, i too are getting one in the near future. the way i drive i doubt i will be gaining mpg :)

slightly off subject now, how do you find out how many mpg you are doing ? is it the trip/navi button ? this dont bring up mpg for me just a wierd L/something and average speed i think.

cheers !

would love to get some 'discreet' decals... would be interested as well if anyone has info...

the l/something refers to how many litres of fuel you are consuming for every 100km i think [that's european interference getting the better of us! ]; you can change it to km/l which would give you kilometres per litre, or, mpg [what i have - i can only think in mpg] by using the button on the right hand side which one uses to adjust bass, treble, balance, etc. for the sound... if you keep pressing it, you'll get to the l/something after the fader option i think; rotate the same button to switch to mpg... sorry this is so longwinded and hope it works...

i find the average mileage shown is somewhat off the true value though...

what i do is to zero the odometer when i fill up to the brim, and divide the amount of petrol i fill up to the brim the following time by the mileage covered... problem remains that one can only buy petrol by the litre and i really dunno exactly how many european litres make a british gallon...

i use 5 litres to the gallon and mine does 33-35mpg on easy driving B) and only 22-25mpg when am enjoying myself :D ...

I've heard of that method, but it's not always gauranteed. The safest and most reliable way to reset ecu is 25-30mins Battery disconnection. This always makes any charge still left in the system to totally be used up. 10-15mins is not always enough time.

100% correct, the wheels straight trick is very important. As it can also cause the VSC and TC lights to come on. Basically if the tyres are not straight and ECU is reset, what happens is when you connect power back up, the system does a type of boot up check and calibrates certain things. It also centers the steering software and thinks the tyres are straight when they are not.

What happens next is you go for a drive and your TC and VSC will light up when you are driving straight, the car thinks you are actually going sideways as the steering control sofware diagnostics set your 'non straight' steering as 'straight'.

Hope that wasn't too confusing. I actually think this could be affecting alot of people on the boards after doing ecu resets for whatever reason, Induction kits etc...

How much extra have people been paying on insurance after fitting a K&N Kit?

Admiral quoted me an extra 45 pounds.

That is very interesting, I actually did not know that. I am learning something new from you everyday! Cheers.

  • 3 weeks later...

I just installed a typhoon kit myslef and was wonder 2 things. Once from previous reading, if I unplugg the batterie for about 1/2 hours that shoudl reset my computer right? Also, I have this small horse that ran from the engine that was connected to my old horse that was conneccted to my old air filter. what do I do with that? Just leave it there? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

If you check the other threads on induction kits, you should find some have either blanked off that hose, or fed it back into the manifold area.

Sorry i'm not much more help than that, i went for a K&N 57i which doesn't need any special instuctions.

The typhoon is slightly more fiddly, but will be worth it once its setup correctly.

Cheers

I'd leave it there if I were you. Otherwise you will lose at least 1 horsepower.

When i fitted my two days ago i hed a few problems like the kit said to disconect the hose from the inlet and disconect the hoses from the brown sensor so i thought i would leave them both conected and it works fine the other problem i had was that the air sensor was to short the black wire needs to have a lenght put in it so it doesnt pull on it. but they are only little problems compared to the diffrence and the sound of it is so cool B) and it can sound quiet when you want it to. ive also fitted a mag power2 oil filter and vr1 fully synthetic .
