Brake Discs

Avensis luna 03

I have 82K miles on the original pads and disks and am about to change the pads. (Avensis 1.8 2003) They are getting close to end of life.

The disks look fine. A lip of about 1.5mm around the edges but not scoring or corossion. Also no shaky steering from warping. Will they be ok or should I change the disks as well.

All opinions appreciated. Thanks

I would say you have had excellant mileage out both discs and pads. By your description it sounds like they have a bit more life in them yet but seeing as they have done that mileage I think you owe it to yourself to put a fresh set on.

Thank you kindly for your reply dibber.

Mr. T advice was to leave the discs alone so I bought the pads which I will change soon. Mechanic said no need to change unless they were corroded, which they're not.

At €320 + 21% VAT, I didn't need much more encouragement to leave the discs for another while.

I was in a similar situation, and got them "skimmed" by a local mechanic for £25.00. They will be good now for at least another 25k.

You just need to be a little careful to measure the "Minimum thickness" A disc wears away over its lifetime and sometimes becomes too thin, well done on getting to that mileage, you must be a careful driver

Avensis disks wear quicker (perhaps it's due to brake material)

I have 100k on my Mercedes on original discs and they are less worn than the 48k on my Avensis, which will probably need replacing next brakepad change. Also I had 140k on my Audi on original discs and still going strong

70k on my Peugeot discs well scored and needed replacing.

Hi All,

Thanks for all the replies and the advice and links.

I have replaced just the pads.... would have got another 10-15k miles out of them if I was to push it, but the last thing I would want is the wear indicators kicking in at the start of a long journey!!

Parts-King, I really appreciate your compliment. I'd have to admit to being almost the direct opposite to a careful driver but a lot of the mileage I cover would be long distance journeys with not a lot of braking. I presume that this accounts for the reasonable mileage.

Rossi, thanks for the link. I did have a look on that site and they certainly offer a much better deal than Mr. T for the discs. As I said, I ended up just putting in the OEM Brake Pads.

uumode, You are correct. The discs do wear quickly due to the material. I remember a mechanic telling me that the harder the discs, the less efficient / effective the barking.

yme402, I could have got them skimmed, don't know what the cost would be but that woud be "another bit off" the disc which I didn't think was necessary as the disks were clean (no corrosion) and there was absolutely not shudder on braking which would indicate warping.

Thanks again.
