Lost Master Keys

Before I spend 500 pounds on getting my '03 Avensis ECU reprogrammed can anyone tell me if they have managed to copy a grey (non-master) key, either onto other transponder keys or onto a working remote control key?

If not I'll probably be getting this done and I'll report my experience here.

It can be done.

You can 'clone' a transponder key. This can only be done using a Locksmith which has a Silca RW3 machine. The following links may be of help:

http://www.kaba-ilco.com/key_systems/produ...achines/RW3.asp

http://www.nwkeys.co.uk/Portal.aspx?page=43∏=7503

http://www.e-aldridge.co.uk/produ.html

As I understand, Aldridge (area wholesaler) should be able to advise you of a local Locksmith who has taken delivery of one of these duplicating machines. This procedure will give you a second 'Grey' key.

Reprogramming a 'virgin' key using your grey key is impossible (as you have probably been told already)

Thank you for that definitive answer. It rings true with some of the things I have been told. I'm pretty sure there is a local locksmith with a Silca transponder key duplicator. I have been told that these duplicate keys have chips that are Battery powered and that these can run out and leave you stranded if you don't have the original key with you. Do you know if there is any truth in this?

Yes they do have batteries. I have been told that they should last 5-10years so that isn't an isuue. Of course you could hide your remaining grey key inside your car as a back-up. I'm also told that it is possible to clone a cloned key.

OK I was told 2 years but that was by someone who had an interest in getting the £500 out of me. I guess I'll try that first and see how it goes. Thanks for the help.

  • 3 months later...

So several months later I have saved up and got it done properly by http://www.skeletonkeys.biz/

Cost £450 + VAT Ouch!

However, I now have two Toyota branded remote keys plus the original grey key and it took about two and half hours. They came round while I was at work and my wife was in.

I'll post back an problems but so far so good, if I just don't think about what else you can do with £529.
