What Could That Be...

Just bought a ts recently, it is an '02 model, (thunder grey? not sure about colors), 3door, leather and some added TTE extras.

Anyway, I had it checked out and technically it was all sound, quaranteed to be accident free etc. So all good, it also looks and drives great B) , had a 120k KM service just done (it had gone a bit over, right now it is over 80k miles total) and it had all sorts of oils changed, all filters changed etc etc, nothing major needed changing. Coolant was changed, but the cooling system was said to need a full cleaning, as it had some sand/mud... hmm. Going to get that done asap, wonder how that got in there? It has no leaks apparently.

Ok, sry to get a bit carried away, the real question is about this odd sound I get from the left side (seems to come through the vent hole) it sounds like some plastic getting the "extreme shakes"... I don't know quite how to describe it more accurately. Oh yeah, the car is an LHD version. Could it be something with the intake? Seems to happen above 3k revs somewhere. No problems with lift or anything else, and the vent hole itself does not seem to be loose or anything... anybody got any ideas about that? Could it be engine just cold? (haven't had much time to test it) Thanks! :) (will ask also next time at the service when I get the cooling system washed/cleaned)

Hi there mate, welcome to TOC :) Are you sure the rattle is coming from/behind the vent? I get a very annoying rattling noise coming from the audio controls on my steering wheel as the plastic housing is loose and I have no idea how to tighten it up. Next time you get the rattling noise, just put a finder on the audio controls and see if it stops, that would at least rule it out. :)

Thanks for the welcome. :)

I'm quite sure it somewhere either under the dash or inside the ventilation or somewhere thereabouts. Could any of the pumps make such noise? The car itself is stable and not much vibration (hardly any :D ) inside at all when going faster etc... It seems to start at certain revs, then stop at higher revs again... next gear again but not all gears I think, or maybe I don't notice it then anymore.

btw, the stereo and wheel are rock solid. :P not much noise at all actually from plastic or other interior besides that, surprisingly. I guess it must have been driven on supersmooth autobahns all its life  Estonian roads will fix that quick though :!Removed!:

Solution - Get one Battery drill, one 12mm drill bit and one can of expanding foam.

Drill hole in dashboard approx where the noise is coming from...............

Repeat as necessary

I have a rattle as well but its only because i never taped down the road angel wire when i run it....i will fix it as soon as i can afford some exp foam.. :-)

hmm... that would definetly be the cheaper fix I guess. Sry, for being a noob, (with this and cultural language diff) but I don't get the second part of what you refer to: "never taped down the road angel wire when i run it..." ??

and as long as I'm asking questions, here's another: What are you guys referring to when you say: "xx plate car" ? I thought it was the year, but then some numbers don't make sense at all. :D

No problem Marko,

I ran a wire round my car to prevent having wires hanging down from my windscreen mounted speed camera detector, and i never used sticky tape to secure it so it rattles intermittamtly, i just never remember to fix it untill it starts ratteling again.

As for the xx plate, in the UK Car number plates are issued twice a year, for example March this year 07's were released and in spetember this year 57's were released. So the last number indicates the year, the first one indicates if it was a registered between march and Sept or Sept and March the following year; so march 2014 will be 14, september 2014 will be 64's etc...

So you have not done it for yourself then?? Don't anyone be stupid enough to put expanding foam behind your dashboard.
