Fuel Problems

Hi Everyone,

I am a newcomer to the Yaris site and find it really helpful and interesting.

I have a two year old 1.4 turbodiesel Yaris T Spirit and after 22,000 miles of brillant motoring at around 66mpg it suddenly stopped on a motorway. I got it going again but eventually it had to be towed into my local Toyota dealers. The computer readout showed a problem with the fuel air mixture sensor but this turned out to be great lumps of muck in the bottom of the fuel tank which were blocking the underside pickups in the pump.

All this took several days to diagnose and eventually a new pump and fuel line were fitted, the tank cleaned out and the contaminated fuel removed. Unfortunately I cannot say exactly which filling station was responsible so I have to pay the £234 bill for the work myself. The car is still under warranty but of course contamination is not covered because from the Toyota point of view nothing actually went wrong.

My question is this: has any other Yaris owner experienced a problem like this recently? I am interested to know if this is a one off or a more general problem? Apparently the fuel pump starts to pick up fuel from the bottom of the tank somewhere below the half way mark. Above that it picks up fuel through holes in the top of the pump. So if you hit this problem and can get the tank filled up you can carry on driving providing you keep the fuel gauge in the upper half.

I do hope this may help someone some day.

All the best

Hi, I am no expert but many vehicles (usually older than that though) suffer from shy-te in the tanks that CAN get sucked up and clog things up. This usually happens if you let the tank drain too low, hence I always fill up asap, when I get the reserve light come on.

Also, diesels USED to suffer from he fuel going jelly-like, on very cold days. I beleive this problem is almost past us now, whith addatives in the fuel, etc.

As for being a common complaint to this model, I know of no such problem, although if it is, then Mr. T SHOULD foot the bill as it would then become a ehicle problem, not a fuel one!
