New Alloys For Avensis 2001 Darkblue?

Hey all - I've got a Y reg avensis 2.0 cdx and having some to the end of life for a couple of my tyres was about to buy another full set. But then I found ones that have been winning things like Evo's tyre tests (goodyear eagle f1 asymetric's or conti sportcontact3's) seem to only be 17" +, and my avensis has 16" alloys. So I thought to myself - why not get new 17" alloys and good tyres on those? So, despite days and days of research, study, browsing and so on, I have some questions to throw out for asap responses :

- what will be the differences to the ride comfort/handling etc? (I'm not sure how sharper it'll handle or worse the comfort will be)

- does anything need to be adjusted for me to make the change in size?

- what are the "vital stats" of the car for putting new wheels on? all I know about is the 205/55/r16 I already have. I've a feeling I'll need to get 205/45 or 205/40 r17's?

- am I going to chew through tyres even faster than I did before? (I definately count as a spirtited driving guy)

- is it going to end up a bad move for overall driving experience? (since I'm not doing this to try and look like a drugdealer)

- am I wrong in thinking that black alloys with silver rims look good on the dark blue avensis? (eg go here http://www.bmf-gmbh.de/cgi-bin/wolfrace/fr...x&BildText= and make the car blue and stick on wheel #7) My friends are split 50/50 on it and I know it's subjective but still! It's that or a very minimalist 5 spoke or split 5 spoke design in silver I guess? (eg stick on wheel #4)

All thoughts/tips welcome from those who've done such things before!

Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3's come in 16"... so no need to go to 17" if you don't really want to. (same goes for the continentals.. certainly for sport contact 2's anyway.)

- what will be the differences to the ride comfort/handling etc? (I'm not sure how sharper it'll handle or worse the comfort wilbe)

If you go wider with a lower profile you will have more rubber on the road and less flex in the sidewall.. this improves the handling but will decrease the comfort a little (you will feel more bumps in the road.. but you will get used to ok)

- does anything need to be adjusted for me to make the change in size?

NO - but it won't do any harm to get the tracking/alignment checked once you do.

- what are the "vital stats" of the car for putting new wheels on? all I know about is the 205/55/r16 I already have. I've a feeling I'll need to get 205/45 or 205/40 r17's?

The recommended sizes for the Avensis is as follows......

15" - 195/60x15

16" - 205/50x16

17" - 215/40x17

18" - 215/35x18.

I know you said you have 205/55x16.. so, to keep the same overall rolling radius (height of sidewall) you would go for 215/45x17 which are -1.04% smaller.

- am I going to chew through tyres even faster than I did before? (I definately count as a spirtited driving guy)

No.. not necessarily.. as you know.. it depends on your driving style and the brand of tyres you choose and the road surfaces you drive on that determine how long a tyre will last. A tyre that is good on one car may not be good on another car, even if it is the same make and model.

- am I wrong in thinking that black alloys with silver rims look good on the dark blue avensis? As for the looks of your car.. the easy answer to it is this.. It is your car, put on a wheel that you like... my opinion (if you want it) is that Gunmetal wheels with a polished/chrome lip looks good on almost any colour of car.. black wheels can sometimes be overkill. The dark wheel with polished lip is ver Jap Stylee and will suit the Avensis, but remember, the only person that matters is you... if you like them.. put them on.

Thanks for the link. Though it seems they don't hvae my auto 2.0 vvti cdx model on there for some reason? But I guess the settings are all the same.

I did notice though that if I set it to 16", none of the sizes are 205/55/r16 which is what I currently have. Does this mean I have the wrong size on there currently? (they were already on) Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Tomorrow I'll either have to just suck it down and get 16" tyres nextday or if it's possible order wheels that noone can agree on for nextday if that's even possible too :P Why can't anything just look "right" to the majority or at least to me ;D It's a real shame you can't really know how it'll look until it's too late! Though in theory I could keep my old ones and have them put back on with more new tyres if the new wheels and tyres are all sucky :/ But an expensive mistake for sure!

Ok so I found out the following :

My Y reg Avvensis cdx is apparently "t22" and "offset 39" and for 17" would be 7.5" rims

My current wheels are Stilauto SR200E's in 16"

http://www.shina-online.ru/images/diski_di...lauto/sr200.jpg

After chatting with the guy at the place I'm getting them from and fitted, it seemed the wheel people said for that Avensis i would get a 17*7 wheel and a 205/40/17 tyre I think, and I ended up getting these in black

http://www.tsw.com/details.php?wheel_id=87...ta_Corolla_1994

I've no idea just how stupid it will look until after they're fitted tomor, but hopefully they'll look ok and hopefully they won't get nicked straight away :P Ended up gettin dunlop sp9000 tyres but there you go, they should wear slower than midrange/budget tyres and slower than the high performance onces like the Pirelli zero neros.

At least this wy I'll end up back at what I thik is standard tyre stuff rather than my apparently abnormal 205/55/16's.
