Good quality 5w 30 or 10w 40 semi synthetic is perfectly acceptable

Even though the manual says 3/30, i have used 10/40 Motul fully synthetic for the past 2 changes. I don't know whether this is ultimately the best choice, but i felt that having an 'older' car with high miles (mine is on 99k), i felt a thicker oil would be better. I didn't specifically want fully synthetic, but was informed that motul are one of the best brands on the market for engine oil, along with royal purple, silkolene and a few others i can't recall at present.

stick an engine flush in before changing oil keeps the hyd lifters from gumming up especialy if u don't know whats been used in the past regards glyn

The ever so slightly thicker 10w 40 maybe more suitable for an older engine, good point about flushing an older engine to get rid of varnish deposits. Buy a good quality/branded oil.

Hi

Thanks for the advice everyone. I will give it a flush and do a full change and new filter. I haven't noticed it using too much oil but I have only had the car for about 6 weeks now. Seems OK but I will have to give it a bit longer to form a judgement on the Avensis. The annoying leak in the boot I still haven't been able to solve yet. Tried some silicone sealant around the rubber seals but still a bit of water in the well where the jack goes.

Thanks again for the input re: what oil to use.

Regards

Dave

The 1.8VVTi engine doesn't have hydraulic lifters. Personally I wouldn't bother with an engine flush since it's fairly pointless these days but also it won't do any harm either if you do feel the need
