Oil Leak

I am havin problems with my gt4 st205. It conked out on me the other day and when i looked under the bonnet there was oil all over the place! it looks as if its comin from the dump valve. my alarm sits just behind the dump valve and it was covered in oil. looked at the dump valve and there is loads or oil inside it too. im lost! the car conked out cause the oil had mucked up the alarm and i lost all power to the car! couldnt even put my hazzard lights on!

any ideas?

check out your braething system! but does sound like you have got lots of ex crank case conpression and most of the time is caused by pistion rings! one way to find out is to do a cylinder leak down test! and you should be able to tell form the results of the test if so will need engine rebuild !

well thats all good news isnt it! lol crap crap crap! last thing i needed was an engine rebuild! bought a new gear box there with 40k on it as 1 of the bearings has gone in the box thats in it at the min! just after a new cluth in it too! i need a better paid job or to win the lotto!!!

its def the piston rings then or does any1 else have any ideas?

Seems most likely - as blink said, leakdown test will soon confirm.

now is the question of how much it will cost me to get it sorted? any ideas? parts only as i have a good friend that works on the car for cheap.

can cost as much as you wont depends if you want to put it standered of if you want to run more power? if so a rebore new pistons, up rated head gasket, cams? and so on ! but need to no if the rings have gone first?

ok it is being looked at on friday. i was thinkin tho, surely if the rings had gone i wud ave smelt burning and seen smoke bellowing out the back due to the turbo burning the oil? there has been no loss in perforrmance or anything!!

just incase any1 has this problem it turned out to be the head gasket. it went all of a sudden!! no lost of power, no smoke just oil comin from the dump valve.

very strange for a head gasket to go on a ST205, what sort of boost are you running? normally the piston rongs go before the HG as it's a metal one as standard

Mate im running standard boost. The car hasnt been changed much. I have the k&n panel filter, power flo custom exhaust and blitz dump valve. Now I dont know what has been done to the car b4 I owned it but I woman owned it and she didnt tell me of any mods. However I have drove about 6 or 7 different gt fours and 2 of them modified heavily with boost controllers etc but mine was def quicker than the 4 that havent been modified and to be honest there was very little in it between the modified 1s. I rang the women I bought it off a few months after and asked did she know of any work that had been done to it and she said no but it was owned buy a guy in his 30s that imported cars and owned a tunning company. I know a bit about cars (not an expert by any means) but I cant see anything that has been done to make it so quick!! Im guessing that if it had been remapped I would b able to see something different in the engine bay?? Plus ive been stopped 3 times by the police and every single time they havent been able to get a reading on their speed hairdryer thingy!! Lol ive looked all over the car and cant see a jammer or anything. The car baffles me sometimes!! Ive had a straight line joist with a new Scooby sittin at 315bhp and it was neck and neck until my lane got blocked and I slipped in behind the scoob and when he got to 150mph he seemed to run out of puff and I had plenty to go!!

However I had a word with a few Toyota mechanics over here and they told me the head gasket can go at any time as the pressure in the gt four is quite high. And after 12 years at high pressure they can just go. This is my 1st gt four so im a bit clueless about it but the mechanics in the Toyota dealership had told me that they have replaced quite a few head gaskets in the gt four before. Was quite supprised after reading that they have quite a strong head gasket on here.

Did a compression test and it showed 116 in 3 cylinders and 70 odd in the 2nd cylinder. But if the rings had gone there wudnt be any compression im guessing. This is all comin from my mechanic by the way. When it comes to compression figures or anything along those lines I wudnt have a clue!!

On another note it looks like there a small bit of fluid coming from the steering pump and it cud need replaced soon! Does any1 know if a standard celica pump would be the same as a gt four. Or any1 know where there a gt four for breaking? As I also need the biggest pipe coming out of the air box as I can see it beginning to split slightly.

having the exact same problem as you mate! oil is leaking from my dump valve, only a little bit though just leaking through it, think it may be the same problem. any ideas?

well the fact that your loosing compression in one of your cylinders is a cause for concern, i'd get ready to do a bit of work on the car or else get ready for a large garage bill for the investigation. to be honest the head gasket could have went but it is alot more likely the ringlands have gone

this is an old post mate. got mine rebuilt with forged pistons and thincker head gasket etc all sorted now

turned out to b a cracked piston
