Speed Details

Here is some info I worked out for my 07 TSport Corolla , standard wheels and tyres (195 55 16)

, standard gearbox and diff . The gear ratios I got from the 'EC CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY' .

Nice maximum speed in second but whoever chose the 5th gear ratio needs a slap  .

I always thought the car was quite low geared but with the high revs the engine can pull

the top speed is massive .

I wonder if independent gear ratios can be changed , a lower 5th would make an improvement .

Interesting Shazzbaa,

Of course you'd never get it to pull top revs in 6th except with serious mods and a very steep downhill.

I imagine that the reason 5th isn't exactly between 4th and 6th is due to limitations of the ratios that you can achive with a pair of cogs or reasonable size, or else why wouldn't they have taken it to the mid point.

I'd kick the person who chose 6th actually; of course 1 to 4 have to be close together to keep it in the lift zone. But surely 6th should be a cruising gear, in which case they could have made it quite a bit longer than it is. The one thing I didn't like on my Celica was the high revs at motorway cruising speeds compared to almost any other car I've driven.

Does anyone know whether the numbers are the same for the Celica? And for the Compressor?

Of course you'd never get it to pull top revs in 6th except with serious mods and a very steep downhill.

I was curious , remembered reading that the car had a top speed of 140mph , pretty damn good for a 1.8 . While driving about town I noticed

it could do 30mph comfortably in 6th , even up gentle inclines at about 1500rpm . The speedo read 40mph @ 2000rpm , 60mph @

3000rpm........so I started to think to myself 8000rpm = 160mph .

But they say it only does 140mph so something must be wrong somewhere , speedos are know to be inaccurate and

maybe they don't rev out in top gear :? .

Anyway in the interest of science I took the car to my "local airfield" on a cool dry still evening , it's

located at approx sea level so lots of thick air was ready for gulping by the engine .

The first part of the runway does have a hill and aided acceleration to the sum of redline in 4th gear which led us to the

flat and level and 5th gear . By now my 'co-pilot' was sitting up a bit and watching the clocks with interest .

Just over 8000revs and fifth is spent and I haven't had a look at the speedo yet , sixth is still pulling and a split second

glance at the clock shows somewhere over 140 and the revs are still climbing .

Red dots in the distance indicate the run is over , last clock check shows the needle well past 8000rpm sitting just before the red segment

of the rev counter and the speedos needle was resting in the reset button . I have no doubt at all that it would

have hit the limiter in top .

First application of the brakes was nothing short of fugly , the second attempt was more successful scrubbing speed off very quickly now .

Holy Craps ! etc. were exchanged between me and the co-pilot .

So that was the first piece of the puzzle in place , they do rev out in top . I thought the speedo must be

miles out , so I set about finding the real speed in detail .

I remembered being given a piece of paper with all of the details regarding the car including

all the gear and final drive ratios . We used this info to produce the spread sheet shown above .

I'm sure some will think i'm a bullsh*tter but meh , I know it's the truth .

One thing I will add though , for some reason my car doesn't have a rear spoiler , the car was

exported the re-imported or something , whatever , it was very cheap .

I wanted to get a spoiler when we first got it but the sleeper style is growing on me now , must save

on drag and fuel too :D .

here it is :-

ahh, least its nice to know my speedo isn't reading too far out... 65mph in second is pretty feasible.

same here, getting a touch (1mph) over on other gears :)

explains why we tend to get a bit on CTRs as well early on, my mate said he had to change to third before he hits 60.
