Unlocking Car Leaves Alarm On

Hi All

I'm new here and this problem I have may be common, I don't know...

I have recently been given a 1992 Toyota Carina E 1.6 GLi by my Dad as he's now been signed off as unfit to drive. A cracking car with very low mileage (he had it from new) and in real great shape. With the car, he's also passed onto me a problem with the driver's door lock.

The car has a factory alarm fitted and locking and unlocking (with a car key only in the drivers door) does not always switch the alarm off. The central locking opens the doors, but the alarm sometimes goes off when you open the door. Fiddling for a few seconds (usually closing the door and unlocking the car a second time) sometimes switches the alarm and siren off.

I've already spoken briefly to my local dealership, and they advise that it's probably the drivers door lock microswitch ? and this is an expensive job, considering the car's value is not very much now.

I did ask whether there is a way to correct the problem cheaply, but only managed to progress disconnecting the wiring block attached to the drivers lock (this would stop the central locking and alarm), or cutting the correct wire so that the central locking still works, but the alarm does not.

Perhaps someone has some ideas. I really don't mind not having an alarm if it means disconnecting it somehow, but central locking is very convenient....

Many thanks

try and buy a 2nd hand drivers lock , from a carina , or an mr2 12/1992 to 03/1994 with the same kind of alarm/lock plug attatched , swap the plug over to your lock and there you go . the alarm gizzmo itself is only held on with a circlip.

it may just need a bit of a clean and a spray with wd40 if you take it out and have a look . its a quite easy job , even spray it from inside the door panel and work the key whilst spraying it . It may just sort itself out.

by the way if i remember correctly , turning on the ignition should turn off the alarm

what i did was to swap the passenger side alarm plug with the drivers side door on a mr2 i owned
