Anyone Had This Noise?

Hi Folks,

When my CTS is being reversed up a slope or pulling away from a standstill with the revs low (to stop the clutch smelling !) i get a noise that sounds like something is vibrating due to car being close to stalling i.e the engine bogs down for a moment. I suspect the noise is a rattling heat shield or the baffles in the exhaust, unfortunatley Mr T disagrees with both of these possabilities but is unable to offer an answer!

I dont beleive its a characteristic as i have all the normal ones :P and i have never seen this mentioned on the forum, car is a 53 plate done 30k and is driven nicely by her in doors 98% of the time :)

Any ideas?

I had the same noise as did lots of other people, did over 20000 miles and never had a problem with anything.

I wouldn't worry about it :D

It could be the same, but i am not sure about the turning part as its more to do with the engine bogging which makes something shake thus causing the noise.

Hey

Yea iv got the same noise as that on my 03. Had my local mechanic look at it (not toyota) and he couldnt find anything shaking on the exhaust. When he went for a spin at first he thought it was a heat shield but when he got it up on a ramp everything tight. My cars done 82k. Mine makes the noise when pulling at very low revs but especially when taking of from low revs. Cant help you with whats making it but sure your not the only 1 with this problem,if thats any consolation!!

Hey

Rite just thought id get back to you about that noise, know its been awhile. Got my car back from mechanic yesterday and he found what was making the noise. He replaced the idler on the aux belt but said that wasnt making the noise. He found that the 4 screws on a/c compressor had come louse but also a heat shield(one above the exhaust just after where 4 pipes from engine meet and before cat) was louse . Thats what was making noise when pulling off and at low revs Car divers like a Rolls Royce now and that annoying transmission sound when you lift off is gone as well. He showed me idler and no play in the bearing so told me to keep it as spare. This mite not be the same prob for every car but symptoms described on here are the same as what i had.Noise sounded like it was coming from left hand side of car to me and him but it wasnt. I had 2 people look at it before this man and they couldnt find the prob so just goes to show .One was Toyota main dealer who just took my money and fobbed me off saying they all do that and other was a local fella. Moral of the story, alway get a second opinion, and just because toyota are charging you £50 an hour doesnt mean your getting a better job! Total from new mechanic 160 euro(£100) including part and he was tracing another prob for me too :D

Easy if you got access to pit or a lift! :P Otherwise means crawling under car while up on axle stands and you wouldnt really want to do that this time of year unless you got a nice big warm garage. He took me down into the pit and showed me what he had done. 4 bolts that hold on the a/c pump and not sure how many on heat shield but prob 4 or 6 id guess. All he did was tighten them up and no more noise,on my car anyhow, nice if it was the same for everyone else. My cars an 03 with 83k and just so much nicer to drive around town now, really was annoying before. Its like every other modern car iv driven now

hmmm mine has developed a rattle recently aswell. To me it sounds like it is coming from the offside rear passenger area and is a slightly low, flapping like rattle sound (I am really bad at describing noises lol). But I know from past problems that noises seem to travel around inside the corolla. Was this the same place you thought the noise was coming from or did your sound like it was on the left side of the engine bay?

I want to get it booked into a garage as it is overdue a service aswell and would like to give them some strong pointers as to what and where the problem is.

To me it sounded like it was coming from left hand side of engine bay and that where mechanic was looking after he drove it.He couldnt locate it first day he look(day i booked it in). Had a good 90 mile spin last night and cars fine after that bit of work was done. All you can say to mechanic is take a look at the 3 things mentioned before. If it not them may be you got a worn suspension bush on the rear. It mite be more or a knocking sound if it was that. Im only guessing thou

Thanks for clearing up where your noise was coming from. With regards to the heat shield, are you talking about one between the manifold and the cat then? Or am I thinking of totally the wrong place?

Yea thats the one, above the exhaust pipe, where 4 pipes from manifold converge and before cat

Just got my car back from having a service and got them to check it out. Turned out to be very simple - one of the rubber mounts on my exhaust had worn out so the back box was bouncing everywhere. Very strange though as I was convinced that it was coming from the other side of the car.

Ah, i've had this noise a handful of times aswell in the time i've owned it.

I'll pop down to my bodyshop tomorrow and have a quick peek while it's on the ramp. If it's a little loose i will get them to fix it, or might just leave it as i am due to order a TTE backbox end of this month, so will get that securely/tightly mounted.

Cheers

Armz.
