2007 Rav4 2.2d4d Xtr Radiator Cooling Fans

Hi have bought a April 2007 Rav 4 2.2d4d xtr.

But I have recently noticed that when I stop in the drive-way or at a road junction that the electric cooling fans are running sometimes.

This does not happen all the time but I am finding it quite annoying.

The temperature gauge seems to be in the normal running position when these fans come on!!!!

My local toyota dealer says that the fans are operating with in normal parameters but I beg to differ.

As the other morning I was driving home from work at 6.00am with an outside temperature of 5 degrees C for a distance of 29 mile averaging 60mph with approximately 3 stops for 10 seconds at junctions and on the final stop at my drive-way the fans were running .Sometimes the fan while the rav4 is being driven with no stops enroute.

IS THIS NORMAL OR IS THERE A PROBLEM CAN SOMEONE OUT THERE TELL ME IF THEIR RAV4 COOLING FANS OPERATE IN A DIFFERENT MANNER

Hi Davey, mines a Mk2 Rav so its got the 2.0 diesel. It certainly does not do this unless its been sitting on

tickover for a while or been driven hard then stop quick. Allthough as a rule of thumb most cars can do

this when stopped being that the airflow is not there to cool the rad I believe the water temp goes up briefly.

Dont think its such a big problem but some of the MK 3 owners if they are on later will give their opinion.

Dave.

Hi Davey

Welcome to the club.

I'll be honest I can't say I've noticed the cooling fans coming on but it's not something I've been looking out for either.

I've never heard them at a junction, I'll keep my ears open and let you know.

Davey,

I've found that the the fan on our T180 is still going strong when the wife arrives home from work and turns off the car (she's a budding F1 driver!). It never seems to last for no more than 30 seconds, I've finally got her allowing 30 seconds of idle for the turbo to cool :D

Have you checked to see if the radiator is dirty?

Hope this helps, Bryan.

the fans run all the time if air con is switched on. otherwise periodiclly in slow moving traffic in hot weather.

or if left idling for along time . (2006 4.3 XT4 D4D)

Davey,

Not sure I've notice my fans on that often either. Not sure I would notice them on when I'm actually in the vehicle.

For what it's worth, the information I have is: with the air con off, the fans should be off below a coolant temperature of 94C and on above a coolant temperature of 96C (if it is really that accurate!).

If you are electrically minded, the fans appear to be controlled via 3 relays and the engine management ECU. The Engine coolant temperature sensor is I believe located in the cylinder head, terminals accessed my removing the air cleaner housing, I think. Sensor resistance should be roughly 2.3Kohms to 2.6Kohms at about 20C dropping to about 300ohms at 80C.

Do the obvious like checking coolant level, and checking the radiator for obstructions like leaves, pedestrians and excessive amounts of shamrock. :D. Though if the temp gauge looks normal it's probably not this.

Maybe you have a slightly out of tolerance coolant temp sensor, or maybe it is just normal or maybe what I've just seen from 2.2 D4D while writing this is your answer - i.e. the aircon is on.

Cheers.

Thanks for the info ,the air con is always off, maybe it is just a faulty sensor as this has only started happening for the past 6weeks, But the problem is convincing the toyota garage to change it. Thanks Davey
