Thanks for the reply, have looked at Rough trax and have sourced a few items that require replacing, many thanks.

Also people have put the frighteners on us by telling us an auto box, if we ever needed one, would cost us about £2000, is this correct-ish? The Surf we just purchased has had a 30,000 mile engine installed months back and the reciepts said £700, so if two grand is athe ball park figure, we could be in trouble??? If the engine was only £700, we thought a gear box would be in the region of a grand???

Many thanks

The auto transmissions on the Surfs are bomb proof if looked after properly, i.e. fluid changes every 18 months or so especially if it has been used as a towing vehicle. Basically the fluid should be the colour of red wine and not brown or burnt smelling. Check the fluid level with the engine running.

If the orange O/D light on the dash flashes, it means there is a fault with the transmission and the code will be logged in the ECU.

p.s. The Surf auto 'box can handle the power of the Lexus 4.0 V8 with ease. (260bhp!)

Cheers guys for all answers, and for helping us out by moving the original post. Feel much better about the 'new' motor.

Just a coincidence we saw an old Top Gear, and guess what 4x4 was named as one of the best? Yip, Surf's up!!! (Well Hi Lux)

Once again many thanks to you all, and as soon as I learn as much, hoipefully we will be able to help someone else as you have us.

Take care
