T180 Peformance Figures

Hi all,

I thought i would post here as more people seem to own the 2.2 DCAT engine in the RAV4 than any other model at the moment; so hoping if somone here knows the answer.

The T180 in my Auris is rather quick which i knew anyway but it seems to be nearly as quick as some cars that on paper are a lot quicker. Now i dont make a habbit of racing but you can tell when you are following something how quick your car is.

The other day i was driving along a bypass following a slow moving truck and a car behind. The slow down was causing a tailback and i noticed a BMW overtake a few cars at once and pull in behind me. I decided to overtake both vechiles infront with near full throttle as it was safe and BMW followed suit.

At the next roundabout it was clear so up to 60 we got and noticed BMW following at 4 car distance but equal speed. Up comes the next roundabout this time with handy merging slip lane. Of course BMW driver HAD to get past. Foot down and he's trying; isn't getting past, see him very slowly coming past me. Now we are at 60, slip lane marge ended a bit ago and he's on the wrong side of road, this is silly, i ease off and he pulls infront inches from me as he spots a car coming other way in distance.

As he came past i noticed the Badge, 335d on the 3 series coupe which of course is a spectatular twin turbo diesel engine powering it into pretty dam quick car territory. Now this thing has an auto as standard so he couldn't have been in the wrong gear and i would doubt he drove on the wrong side on purpose. Needless to say he thought it would be a good idea to massage his ego and regain his matcho status by accelerating up to what must have been 110mph on a 60mph road as he disappeared into the distance.

Still it got me thinking, how little there was in it a car costing 18k and a car costing 38k. I know the torque of the T180 is impressive but does this engine have advantages 30-50 / 50-70 say in 3rd / 4th (which i think is its strongest gears). The mid range performance (the speeds where performance really matters) seems to be much better than its 0-60 time on paper. It defiantly didnt seem that much slower than this mighty twin turbo BMW; until the idiot decided to do horrendous speeds... And i know the recent test of the V6 blade (jap auris) in japan proved that the V6 which is faster on paper was no quicker around the track when the T180 driver learn't how to use the torque to his best advantage.

Dont have a T180, wish I did (except the tyres) but as you say there is plenty on here who do so stick around. ;)

Would also say that you sound crazy enough to be made an honourary member of this forum.

(for having the cheek to drive in the BMW lane ):lol:

There is no doubt that a T180 Auris is a truly astonishing vehicle and there cannot be many "regular" production saloon cars that have been fitted with such an astounding engine.

However, I think you have to concede an overwhelming defeat on this one. If pitted against one of these things on the open road with everyday Joe Public drivers (like me) then it may well turn out to be a battle of courage. Placed in the hands of two equal drivers that know what they are doing then I'm afraid the Beemer with a far more capable chassis and 45% more torque is not a fair comparison even if it has a slightly lower power to weight ratio.

You know how well your Auris goes but you cannot imagine how well that BMW will go in the right hands.

Sorry to rain on the parade but I'm just being realistic.

There are a plethora of cars that the Auris in its sheeps clothing would open a few eyes. You need to set your sights a bit lower than that one though. It was probably an old dear on her way home from Morrisons.

Cheers

Having driven a BMW auto for a few years, I know that they like selecting top gear whenever possible and will only kickdown to a proper "overtaking" gear if you really mash the loud pedal....and then stand back because you've just light the blue touch paper!!

Still when all is said and done, I can only imagine that the T180 engine in your Auris is mighty impressive

The T180 Rav is far quicker than many other motorists realise! :P

I've beaten a number of "hot hatches" of the lights (such as Golf GTI, Focus ST) much to the drivers' surprise! I put this down to the driver of the other car thinking "it's only a Rav" and not using the full power of their car (on paper they are much faster), by the time they realise how quick I am, I'm off in the distance! :D

I think hot hatches are about my limit, a BMW 335d should show me a clean pair of heals.

My wife regularly comes home from work telling me which cars have struggled to keep up with her in the Rav...

The T180 auris is a fair bit quicker than the RAV version but i knew from the outset how much quicker the 353d is.

I just couldn't understand why he couldn't get past me (or at least not that much faster) as he made a point of it - overtaking in a rediculous merge lane.

Either a bad driver or it was a badged up 325d. It was a bloke on his way to work as at the next roundabout he turned right into a business park.

I was more curious to know whether the T180 was quicker 30-50 / 50-70 than its 0-60 time suggests.

:nono::nono::nono: I've already been hooked by the power of the mighty T180....when my kind local MR T let me have one for a test drive  I am sure he knew that I am a gadget lover kind of guy (again :nono: ...not in any sexual way... :nono:) I loved the fact that I left a mondeo TDCi behind, the poor guy did try to catch up and overtake on the slip road but he failed miserably :D

So havin been bitten by the T180 I have managed to curb my needs by getting the xt4 and as I didnt like the lesser diesel I opted for my lovely petrol one...

SO TA very much...for da offer...but I gladly refuse as I do not want to be bitten by that bug again.... B)

However... a Reading Meet would be a good idea no??

Oldsko01,

I reckon the BMW driver was probably just a useless driver.

Mid-range, the 335d is up there with the new V8 engined M3, and it would have had no trouble putting some manners on you - if properly driven.

Sounds like you had a typical encounter with a complete tool who just wanted to show you how much of a good driver he was and how much faster his car was than yours, and come what may, he was going to get past you, blast off at 100mph+ into the distance and then at the next roundabout, turn into his office car park feeling smug with himself!!

Having said that, the reason he was not as quick getting past could be put down to the fact that in his mind, he was overtaking "just" another small Toyota - only a small flex of the right foot needed for this one!!

Bet he nearly soiled his pants when you put your foot down initially

Just as an aside, did you notice this place in the Business Park where the BMW turned into?

And did the driver look anything like this........

Ash7jar has confirmed what I suspected. The chap you came accross was probably not competant, like a cow with a machine gun.

Our good old 2.2 diesel is just a big engine in a small car. It can hurl a RAV along at a fair rate and put in an Auris - almost ridiculous!

Now you can cut me in half and it says Toyota through the middle but I know when to turn away from a challenge. The BMW is also a big but very HIGHLY TUNED engine in a vehicle that weighs a lot less than a RAV if slightly more than an Auris.

As for the 30-50/50/70? Well I wouldn't bet even a quid on it.

Ash - would you care to comment?

Regards

Right well I have been trying to look up the in gear figures for these two cars but as far as I know the guys at BMW did say that my 535d has a 50 to 70 time of 3 seconds now there is not many cars out there that can beet that!. Now just for the record i have a 535d not a 335d but they do have the same engine.

And yes I would say that the 3 series and the Rav4 were the same weight but my 5 series would defiantly be heavier!

Right what i have found here is the torque (lb ft) figures that will give you some idea about the in gear performance

335d 428 (lb ft) and 0 to 60mph 6.1

Auris 2.2 T180 295 (lb ft) and 0 to 60mph 8.0

Rav4 T180 295 (lb ft) and 0 to 60mph 9.3

Eeekkkkk Bm dues have a bit more there!

Figures taken from BBC top gear magazine

i reckon he badged his 335d up; it was probably a 325d - just too slow getting past me.

Anyhow, I know the T180 even in the hatchback has no chance against a 335d. I know its quicker than most but i just wondered how much slower it was in gear to some faster cars because i know it pulls v.well in 3rd and 4th in the hatchback. Its the overtaking performance i'm more interested in as i'm never going to be racing; its real work examples that i like.

I did try and measure it with help a while back when i testing to buy the car and i wrote on the forum:

"

30-50mph (3rd) - 3.5secs (maybe a little generous)

50-75mph (4th) - 6 secs (Toyota claims 8.4secs, so don't know how i managed this)

"

Not scientific accuracy - more like stopwatch "GO" accuracy :)
