Hi Guys the Deakin from Northern Ireland here i have noticed this past while that whenever i put the shoe down i seem to get quite a lot of smoke from the back end ,now i know your going to say this is normal everybody gets some smoke from the back end, but this seems to be worse than normal the only good thing about it is that the smoke is black and not white or i would really have problems,i just had the car seviced there and it seemed to cure it quite a bit but then one of the turbo pipes blew off so i had to get that fixed and the car seem to be worse than ever again. Thanks for any help.

If your turbo pipes blew off ....

I am guessing is is a diesel..

lots of smoke and oil pipes blowing off ..

could damage the turbo gaskets..

The smoke from the back end should be white, because of the catalysator recirculation system! Clean all the turbo pipes.

hi

noted well. just advise the year of build? In fact smoke exhaust is abnormal connected with the rate of FUEL/CHARGING AIR. In case the engine is provided with recirculation then it is not admissible to have black exhaust. The possible reazons are as follows: poor injection spray (due to nozzles worn down); engine overloading; violation of air charging ratio; leak of charging air thru pipes/hoses; fault with cat.convertor; problem with injection timing; valves timing; wear down of turbocharger's bearings. Please note that the black smoke is admissible only when the engine is started as cool. It is understood that you have to check all above before taking decision what to do then.

cheers/Igor

Thanks for your reply Igor my car is a 2005 toyota avensis 2.0 turbo diesel with 87,000 on the clock not big miles for a toyota engine,i think i will take it to a diesel fitter to see if the pump is set up right.Sorry i did not get back to you sooner.

hello again

please do not speed up with HP fuel injection pump. Just tell me when the fuel valves have been last tested on opening pressure??? May be the problelm is with them. The milage of more than 80k might be enough to get poor injection resulting to black exhaust. The pump timing must be verified in the end of your investigations. By the way i do not believe you could start the engine if the injection timing is wrong (!). Smoke exhaust is the first reazon that the ratio of charging air is less than fuel. Check also the life time of Turbocharger before overhauling. Are you sure the pereformance of turbocharger is sufficient to discharge sufficient air quantity depending on the engine load? DO not be so fast with your conclusions. IN case you deal with supercharged engine then you must evaluate all possible reasons before destroying your car heart. :D

my mail is (engine@seaborn.com.ua or skype /seabulker/) sincerest wishes/Igor

Bad turbo seals = burning oil = smoke from engine

hi

if it could be then the exhaust will be blue confirming burning of oil (!). Do not miss.

cheers/Igor

Yes blue smoke = engine oil burning

black smoke = funburnt diesel.

Yes blue smoke = engine oil burning

black smoke = funburnt diesel.

Correction .... Black smoke is incompletely burnt diesel (i.e. partially burnt)

Unburnt diesel is White smoke (i.e diesel vapour)

Black smoke is when the diesel has not burnt fully, either because there was insufficient oxygen present (or too much fuel). Other things like timing also affect the burn and produce black smoke.

White smoke is produced when fuel is injected ok but does not burn at all, due usually to a failure in compression, i.e. valve problems, piston or bore problems etc.

My advice is don't tinker if you don't know what you are doing, you could make things worse. Get your local friendly mechanic draughted in to have a look.

First thing to check before you get carried away with it is, the Air Filter. A simple choked air filter is often bypassed as the problem.
