I've hard a problem since I got the car, in as much that it starts first time every time when the engine is cold, but if it is warm the engine can take a few seconds of turning over before it catches.

Does anyone know what this might be?

hello mate, it sounds like you've never had a diesel before, because if you had you would know that some diesels can turn over for a good few seconds before they fire up. I have a Volvo truck and sometimes they can turn over for ages, its quite normal, dont worry. hope this helps, Ray.

It's not my first diesel. Never had this problem with the Mondeo TDCI or the Fabia TDI.

I'm waiting for the glow plug indicator to go out before cranking the engine. Is there something I'm missing?

How long are you cranking it for, once the glow plug indicator goes out ?

Mine takes 2>3 secs to start.

Well this took a decided turn for the worse today. I drove 200 miles this morning, parked up for half an hour and returned to the car. Tried to start it, and it wouldn't start. It turned over fine, but it wouldn't catch at all.

Tried for ages, but had to call the RAC to come and attend. Over the 25 minutes between calling and them arriving I tried every 5 minutes or so, but nothing.

When he arrived, he tried and had the same trouble. He took the airbox off, squireted some damp start inside and turned the key. Bingo! It started.

He told me that it was possibly low fuel pressure, and went on to say it was a very common callout reason on the D4D engines, and that Toyota wouldn't tell them the cause. His suggestion was to carry a can of damp start in the glove box.

Now although it got me started, I'm not happy at all. When I'm home (I'm on a business trip for two days) I'm booking it straight into Toyota to be investigated under warranty.

Any ideas on what I can get them to investigate for me?

I had an air leak in my fuel line a couple of months ago....this causes similar issues...not starting and just cranking over.....

Get them to check the lines from the tank to the High Pressure Fuel Pump....

hi

there are several problems that influence on starting both cold and warm engine.

Firstly recognise when the fuel filter was last changed? And evaluate its purity before the next step.

In case you have stated clearly then the most like reason is that the HP injection system is still not free of air.

It is understood the other reasons are also available but in order to go further you must to check with above.

Please type me and will continue.

thanks/Igor

We have a glow plug indicator??

2 years I've had mine, and I've never seen one of those!

Again, this happened today on the way to work. Stalled it in traffic (my fault) and it wouldn't start. I was left stranded in a bus lan in the centre of sheffield. The RAC came gain, got me going with the jump leads and damp start spray, and I to ok the ca direct to the Toyota dealer. Initially they claimed they had no courtesy car to give me, but when I stood my grouned they gave in and gave me another Avensis.

A technician came out to look at the car, and when it failed to start for him, diagnosed it as a starter motor failure. He said that this is very common.

It is being replaced under warranty, and I'll feed back when I get the car back.

Got the car back the following day and the issue is gone!

Until hearing the new starter motor, I had no idea how bad the old one sounded. The new one is very quiet, and starts it on the button regardless of engine temperature.

No quibble over payment either, they didn't even raise the suggestion that I pay any of the cost. They even cleaned the cear for me!
