Hi and welcome to the forum.

Lots of answers to your questions altho the place is riddled with odd folk who buy almost new RAVs!!!

I suppose your oil light issue will depend to some extent on how many miles / how worn the engine is.

I have a 1994 RAV. The original engine did 160,000 before packing up due to lack of oil, caused by a leak at the crankshaft seal and the inability for my daughter/s to find the oil filler cap.

However, I did notice that it took a second or 2 for the oil pressure to build up, so I never revved the engine on immediate start up in the morning. It didn't seem to come to any harm and as I say it was an oil leak which caused the engine failure.

Others on here will give you a better technical answer but things like how you drive the car (high revs/thrashed/what oil you use/what mileage/is it standing on a slope will help them if you do a quick reply.

The above message has been translated from Scots to enable our English wizards to unnerstan wit ahm oan aboot.

Sorry

Meant to reply earlier but got waylaid!

It seems from your explanation that the oil is running back to the sump. The only thing that prevents it from doing so is the diaphragm non return valve that you can see coloured red through the holes in the new filter above but to help a bit further you can see it in this cutaway;

xxaofilter.gif

I don't know whether the problem coincided with you fitting the filter but it should definitely not be empty if you remove it. Even a Mr T filter can develope a fault so start by fitting a new filter and that should cure it. We need Kingo to just look at that part number but it looks like a US number to me.

PS although my brew looks a bit gloomy in the above picture it was actually very nice!

Well you know were all wet, if you had defended us instead of fighting each other over the colour of your skirts it would never have happened. And then look before you know it Hade steps in and builds a wall to keep you from pickin on us.

Government is probably Roman when you think about it?

The filter is correct, I had a look last night. Over the years, Toyota have made oil filters smaller and smaller, the original on the early RAV's was a bit taller and held more oil, these short filters, 90915-YZZJ1 are tiny and hold little oil anyway. The Toyota oil filters have always had a non return system (as in Anchorman's photo) I think you need to consider there is maybe more things afoot, if changing the filter does not cure the problem

Hi John and welcome to the RAV4 section of the TOC :)

I'll share a past experience with a motor i had...the car in question was a 2000 reg Lexus IS200 with 21K on the clock, this car i only used a few times a months and the oil from the filter would drain back to the sum ,so when i started it up, it would take 3-4 secs for the oil light to go out, this troubled me as poor oil circulation on start-up will shorted the life of any engine.

So i bought a TRD oil filter, this has a much better none return valve within the filter and after fitting it , cut my oil light time in half, they are a bit expensive at £24.00 ish, but if it can make you engine last longer its a cheap option.

Of course as suggested above you engine may not be in the best of health, no many easy ways to check the internal condition of your engine, short of dropping the sump and inspecting the main/big end shells, you could fit and oil pressure gauge just to keep an eye on the pressure hot and cold, if you decide to do this I'll look up the pressure for you :) ....good luck.

Never trust the Romans. How many RAVs have ye seen in Rome. All I got was an attemtped mugging, but being a Scot held ma wallet and ran like Fk. Spend ma holiday money on ma RAV noo.

Interesting about the TRD filter.

Oh and we built walls tae keep the water oot. A lesson not learnt by yer neeburs.

Hi Bob thanks for the reply, the engine has done 60,000 miles and runs very well even after a 100 mile run and a slow tick over the light has never come on, its just this few seconds in the morning thats bugging me

Thanks Kingo I have also tried the Halfords filter the same problem, always empty in the morning, but apart from that the engine is running great even when hot no sign of a flicking light.

Thanks Ian after trying a few more filters, I think the cheapest option would be to stand the RAV up and rest it on the front bumper

I dunno if the sensor or whatever measures the oil pressure might be a bit sticky causing the light to hesitate on start up...? As I said I had it and the engine did 160,000 miles. I bought the haynes RAV book done for the USA market and see if theres anything shows up there...altho it might still be in the RAV which is in the garage getting the clutch prob done. I'll have a look.

I bolted 6 large cibies on the front which keeps the front down. Now with the turbo engine, the guys have added baffles in the sump to reduce any tendency of oil starvation on accelaration up mountains. None of us have had the thought of the oil filter or oil pump, but then the 3SGTE engine is meant to be a bit stronger than the 3SFE. They share the same block though.

I picked up a 3SFE engine for a couple of hundred quid 2 years ago before deciding to go down the route of the turbo....but you've got a lot of miles before you need worry about that one.
