I have a 1996/7 SSR-G with a Double DIN CD / tape player. Unfortunately the cd player has decided that the only CDs it will play are the highlights from "war of the worlds" and my wifes Mary J. Bligh CD. On Removing the old stereo I found that all the wires from the stereo go into an amp module. If I replace the stereo with a new one do I run the new stereo through the amp or by-pass it all together?

Mary J BILGE you mean !!!

It really depends on what headunit you're planning on fitting. If it's got a built in Amp ( most seem to ) then you won't need to go through the separate amp module. If it's just a line-out type then you will.

Have you tried stripping and cleaning the CD mechanism. It usually works well and only takes 10 minutes, with no specialist tools except cotton buds.

( welcome to TOC by the way ! )

I agree with the MJ Bilge comment. Thanks for the welcome.

I have tried using a laser cleaning CD with no success. Would a strip and clean be any more successful?

I am currently bidding in an on line auction for a single DIN MP3 cd player and a single DIN pocket so will try the strip and clean method once I have no use for the old stereo any more, Just in case I screw it up. If it works then I can sell it on line.

it usually works.

Take the cover off and you'll se the mechanism. There'll be a plate with a spinning circular block on it over the middle of the mech. Take this off ( usually 2 screws ) and you're into the bones of it. Carefully wipe the lens with a cotton bud and some methylated spirit, then dry it with a dry cotton bud. Apply a thin layer of 3 in 1 oil to the silver runners at either side where the laser tracks up and down and gently push the laser unit backwards and forwards to work the oil into the bearings.

Then give it a try.

The laser intensity can be increased by adjusting a potentiometer on the main pcb, but really you should only try this as a last resort.

Thanks. I will give this a try once I have it out of the car. Could be quite a lucrative thing if this fixes the problem as there are quite a few listed in the local online auction with the same problem for $1 reserve.

Hi, I have a similar problem with my current stereo, although I haven't got a Mary J Bligh CD to test completely ;)

I decided to replace the unit with a single DIN one but I don't know where to start! Once I'm started I'll be fine :) I just need to know how to get the old stereo out?

I'm guessing I need to remove the cover from the centre console which does not seem immediately obvious to me? having recently performed this delicate task could you assist even if just to point in the direction of the resources you used? Many of the posts I have found refer to the pre '96 models.

Many thanks
