hi new member, i have a 1999 t reg lwb gx, the auto locking fob stopped working, have had the key fob checked at dealer transmitting ok just doesnt lock unlock, immobiliser/alarm still flashes ok any idea,s? i have an american haynes manual no help. i have a weird noise on the overun i hear a mechanical noise no loud, a sort of sigh as if the engine revs speeds up a bit but it doesnt? theres no increase of noise with revs? said it was weird. my timeing belt is due changing as is the clutch any tips or hints on diy? i managed to change the timing belt on my fiat ducato camper ok last year, i used 2 x 10mm drill bits to lock of pump and pulley rest was a doddle? is it vaiable or let a mechanic do it if so whats the going rate for the job? is it just the belt or pulleys as well? any aftermarket items to avoid i usually dont buy toyota there pricy, i needed 2 indicator side lights last year toyota wanted £37 each i got 2 from usa via eBay for £35 all in that also included $20 shipping pays to shop around. Is the clutch a goer diy or let the pro,s do it? whats involved and whats the cost? any one fitted an ecoteck valveon the brake servo inlet? i have heard they lower emissions for mot and improve torque and fuel consumption? thamks for your help anyone who replies i live in the north east near saltburn by the sea and the moors 17 mls to whitby best fish and chips on the north east coast, saltburn has a restored pier and is motorhome friendly.

Wally nice long post for your first. ;) ..Welcome to TOC and the RAV section....

Not much of a mechanical guy my self....Anchorman is the guy you want...no doubt he will be along soon to help out on your queries....

Also we have a Toyota parts man on here, goes by the name of Kingo...Very helpful and reasonable rates as well, also get extra 10% off as well (just need to sign upto there web site)

Been to Whitby a few times over the years...

Can't comment on the motor-home bit though...maybe some of our more older colleagues can best comment on that....O just don't mention trains on her to many times...It starts em of :wacko::wacko:

Welcome to the club.

I have to find time to drive trains and so disappear for periods of time!

Firstly, we had a long weekend at Robin Hoods Bay during January 2005 and visited Staithes not so far away from you;

It was as cold as hell (without the fires) but was very beautiful and you live in a very nice part of the world.

Now having said all that I'm not sure I can be so much help because I am not so familiar with 4.1 RAVs. However, I will generalise but you will have to keep that in mind.

hi new member, i have a 1999 t reg lwb gx, the auto locking fob stopped working, have had the key fob checked at dealer transmitting ok just doesnt lock unlock, immobiliser/alarm still flashes ok any idea,s?

Just do a quick search with "remote key fob". Somebody explained recently that the earlier ones have to be re-programed after the batteries have been flat and it is quite straight forward. Perhaps we should find that and get it pinned.

You need to elaborate a bit more - you say its mechanical but to me a sigh isn't mechanical  Do you mean like a whistling noise?

my timeing belt is due changing as is the clutch any tips or hints on diy? i managed to change the timing belt on my fiat ducato camper ok last year, i used 2 x 10mm drill bits to lock of pump and pulley rest was a doddle? is it vaiable

If you have done one on a Ducato then you should be OK with the RAV. If it is the VVTi engine pm me with your email and I will send you a pdf file with the instructions. If not maybe somebody else can help with a page from the manual? The VVTi needs a tool to de-tension the alternator drive belt but you can improvise. Incidentally a timing belt that is very slack makes a kind of whirring noise on overrun. If you stand at the engine you can hear it if you rev the engine then as the revs fall it comes from the front end.

or let a mechanic do it if so whats the going rate for the job? is it just the belt or pulleys as well? any aftermarket items to avoid i usually dont buy toyota there pricy, i needed 2 indicator side lights last year toyota wanted £37 each i got 2 from usa via ebay for £35 all in that also included $20 shipping pays to shop around.

Toyota charge about £75 per hour plus VAT - other garages something less but I do my own so can't be sure. Remember if you do it yourself it is at your own risk! Buying timing belts is something I'm very fussy about. I will only use a Gates belt from the aftermarket but as Chatman says we have Kingo and he will sell you a genuine one at a discounted price. I would change the pulleys if they made any noise or were in any way suspect but not necessarily otherwise.

Is the clutch a goer diy or let the pro,s do it? whats involved and whats the cost?

Again if you are reasonably competent then it is a matter of dropping the box out like most other cars. You need to get it up in the air and some decent help as the box is heavy but it is quite "doable"

any one fitted an ecoteck valveon the brake servo inlet? i have heard they lower emissions for mot and improve torque and fuel consumption?

Don't know about these things. I can't imagine why manufacturers don't fit them if they are so good but I remain open minded!

I had the clutch done at a toyota dealer the first time 10 years ago and the book price was £600!

Far as I know its a fairly simple job to drop the gearbox. The haynes manual gives you that info I think.

With the rest I'm not sure. What mileage has the car done??

Being old (over 30) I'm losing the plot a bit just now (reasons in other posts).

The 4.1 clutch can be replaced by loosening off the engine mounts bar the engine offside one, then using an engine support bar (across the top on the suspension mounts at the front or on the wing gutters; you can the drop/tilt the engine down slowly to a point where the gearbox can be removed and the clutch replaced. You don't need to drop the whole engine. However at that mileage, you might find that trying to split the gearbox from the transfer box is hard/impossible in which case you would need to take both off. Then its a heavy job but possible if you have the right equipment, and help.

If you want to try this, give Dennis or Marc a call at The Garage in Wishaw - 01698 375789 - cos they did it for mine. dennis is the young marvel that did it.

The engine drops down below - don't get told it will come up the way by a cheap garage cos it won't without serious metal removal.
