Just been looking at the Fifth Gear website, and a small SUV is being planned by Toyota.

Maybe this will make up for any loss of sales from the lack of a 3 door Rav? They could call it SAV 4 (Small Activity Vehicle)!

Not the most flattering colour, green, IMHO.

I'll wait and see what the final production version looks like before passing judgement ;)

Hmmmmmm, to me that looks like its based on a Diahatsu terios. And being that Toyota own Diahatsu

that might be the reason

For those who remember.............I did say watch this space!

Toyota only have a few minor model changes for 2008 and I dont expect to see anything new until 2009. I don't think you will see that car in anything like that format. Like I say, 2009 is a big year for new models

Good find Fuj, it does look interesting - I could go for that, but no intention of changing the RAV for a good few years yet.

No neither have I ............but when I don't need the space to haul pushchairs and the like, something a little smaller could fit the bill ;)

Toyota as far as I know are not changing the RAV just yet, the car above is being called a RAV by everybody but it will be in fact a brand new model, a small SUV, and will not be called a RAV, no details as yet as it is not due till 2009 so I wouldnt say the pictures above are the final product by a long chalk, a lot can happen it 12 months or more

Toyota Cami, Daihatsu Terios (from Wikipedia):

The first-generation Daihatsu Terios is also known as Huali Dario Terios in China, the Toyota Cami and Perodua Kembara (Malaysia), while the Zotye 2008 is apparently a bootlegged, unauthorized copy of the car, which caused some controversy.

"Toyota Cami" was introduced with "Dancing baby" CF in Japan, which CG-drawned many babies dance in avant-garde style.

In Indonesia, this car know as Daihatsu Taruna which have longer rear-based body capable for 7 seat and a difference facelite. But there also newer model are now referred as "Terios".

Second Generation

On the Japanese Domestic Market the Terios has been succeeded by the Daihatsu Be-go and Toyota Rush, however, in European, South American and other Asian markets, the new model is sold under the name Terios.

The Be-go, and the similar Toyota Rush both use a 1.5-litre engine; diesel versions arrive in mid-2007.

In December 2006, Toyota and Daihatsu (Indonesia) launch the second generation of Rush and Terios which have longer body based and offer 2 rows or 3 rows of seats.

Personally I quite like the Terios and if I didn't need the space and they did a diesel engine......who know's!

Saw one of these today, it really does look like a mini Rav! :)

A mate of mine has run one of these for just over 12 months and it has never missed a beat. It is on the 4.2 floor pan and running gear I believe.

I looked at one before buying the RAV and I have to say it was vvery impressive. It was just that 1.5 petrol. It needs a diesel as Fuj' says.

I have read several road tests for this motor and they make rather poor reading, two points worth noting, very poor ride comfort and the engine is very noisy and needs to be thrashed within an inch of it life to get the thing to perform.

So not in the same class as any RAV4  :) .

In Japan this motor is called a Toyota Rush.

With a 1.5 Petrol engine no wonder you need to thrash it

I'm still of the opinion that the new Toyota small SUV will be a new model and not something in disguise.....maybe :eek::eek:

Agreed! If you read the report linked to post 7, it mention's that this new small SUV is likely to be based on a Yaris platform.

In effect a tall, 4x4 Yaris!

Just to go back to the Daihatsu Terios for a moment (as opposed to the new Yaris based small Toyota SUV).

It does not surprise me that road testers have found the ride poor and performance lacking.

Indeed it is to be expected that in a tall, narrow, short wheelbased car, that the suspension would be firm to aid stability (to avoid the fate of the orginal softly sprung Merc A class and the Elk test).

It is equally to be expected that a 1.5 engine in an SUV, with all the usual performance killing qualities of an SUV, shaped like a (cute  ) brick, extra wieght, 4x4 system to drag around etc., is not going to be ripping up the tarmac.

For a starting price of £11,995 brand new, on the road, I think it's a cracking little car! :yahoo:

To my mind there is only one fault with it.........the lack of a diesel engine! :(

Exactly

I had a good crawl around one of these things when I was gearing up to buy a 4X4 and It is built like a tank. The one I drove was very smooth (even the gearbox) albeit I did clock the stiff suspension - it was not uncomfortable. I cannot imagine anything on a Yaris floorpan even coming close. To me this vehicle builds in all of the strength of a trusty 4.2 and also some new features. I would compare the Yaris 4X4 with a Panda 4X4 if I wanted to compare eggs with eggs.

As Fuj says, this is a cracking compromise and gets you effectively into a new RAV (in sheeps clothing) for the price of a very second hand 4.2.
