2001 Avensis D4d

Recently purchased a 2001 Avesis D4D Hatch, and with the exception of a leak in the booot, that I have finally cured (Feel free to get in touch if you need any help on this, as I know it is a common problem), I have got to say I am pretty pleased with the car. The only thing that is putting me off the car, are all the posts I read on here about faulty Dual mass flywheels. By doing research on this excellent forum, I am getting the strong impression that It is inevitable that they will fail on this car. I have checked mine thoroughly for all the usual symptoms (ticking noise at idle, vibrating clutch pedal etc. and I can detect no signs of any problem. My car has covered 86000 miles, and the question I would like to ask is that does anyone think it would have gone by now, and has probably been already replaced, or do most of these Flywheels actually stand the test of time, and that we only tend to hear about the horror stories? I would love to hear if anyone has actually owned a d4d Avensis, and not had any problems.

Cheers

Tony

To.. be honest.. flywheel faliure should start around 100k of miles.

However it really depends on what kind of life the car has had.

If you have no ticking noises or vibrations from the transmition.. I would assume your flywheel is still good.

Dont worry yet! and welcome to the Toyota club!

Is the flywheel only affect in the diesel cars, or is it potentially an issue with petrol too ?

Only that i noticed for 6 months a rattle from the engine area when pulling away in 1st, then it is gone once moving and have never got to the bottom of what it is

I dont think the avensis PETROL comes with a Dual Mass Fly Wheel.

The rattle you may be experiancing, could be clutch rattle..
