I am thinking of buying the above Toyota, it has 73,000 miles on the clock, what should I look for, what would the expected MPG be, and do they have timing belts or chains, any advice before taking the plunge would be appreciated, thanks

D4D...

2001

expect Above 40MPG and below 45MPG

Belt driven / Cam belt needs to be chnaged at 60k.

Dual Mass Flywheel can be a problem, it all depends on how the car has been treated.

Symptoms are

1) ticking / knocking noise at startup and under heavy load (you will only hear it when you have the windows down)

2) vibrations through the clutch pedal.

Thats the major one to look out for.

Check service history,

Check to see all body panels line up

Check Oil level/colour

check radiator coolant

check oil cap colour and smell.

Check over speedbumps and listen for knocking noises underfull lock.

Check undercarriage..

Check for oil leaks, on the inside of the undercarriage.

- apart from the flywheel problems the d4ds are very good car, nothing really goes wrong with them

and remmber do a HPI check.

edit. gearbox is chunky/clunky... on the d4ds but will go in gear everytime. first time.

Thanks for that info, I take it if the flywheel is faulty it will be an expencive job, for a replacement, or was there a recall for this problem
