Hi

I am sorry if this sounds silly. But we purchased a used rav 4 diesel. We never got the handbook etc.

We wanted to do an oil change and the advice we have recieved about what oil to use was very conflicting.

We went for Castrol GTX semi synthetic 10/40 .Oh my god now our rav is very noisy on start up.

We had a trip of 500 miles to do.and on our return we noticed the change in noise on start up.

which definently wasnt like that before the oil change

Please can anyone tell me what is the best type and grade of oil for our Rav

Thanks Jean

That grade of oil is perfectly acceptable, did you change the filter? the oil on its own would not make it noisy on start up, unless there isnt enough in it!!! 5/30 or 10/40 semi synthetic is fine.

Was it a genuine filter?

And yes it is getting cold, diesels dont like cold weather when starting up they can be quite noisy, just rule out your oil filter as being a problem first, 5/30 is a slightly thinner oil so it wont make it any quieter.

Hi Kingo

and thanks once again.

Yes it was a genuine oil filter.

Is there any thicker oil you would reccomend or do we just wait and see how things go.

I think it is probably coincidental, if you have oil in it, no leaks and the oil light goes out, it is probably just these cold mornings, you dont need thicker oil

ye musnae think o the nutters that add remarks aboot steam trains tae this forum as having ony credibility other than turning a tap on or aff.

A did ma schooling in wallasey, and ma Aunt stayed in west kirby so ah kent the hassle ye'll hav unnnerstannin the crap writtne by some o them whit think they know things. They dae, but its jist ol men wi a fetish!

I boucht wan o the first RAVs tae enter Scotland back in '94 and as ye see frae ma detail the beast has become a flying machine.

Hooever, I have had a wee bit o experience wi diesel (no Toyotas but) and ah alwis foond that in starting oan a cold morning ye should gie it a few minutes tae warm up. Afore ye switch tae diffrent oils, ye need tae consider if the car is kept ootside oan a driveway; ootside oan an open road; in yer garage (oh a ken there's no many hooses in Lancashire wi garages) or in a sheltered bit. Start up and let it run until the engine/ injection system has warmed up. Without revving it. Don't hurry things. All ye'll get is an ulcer - ah ken cos a've been there.

If its still noisy aifter that, then get it checked jist in case there's wear or something else wi the engine bits. However ye shouldnae have any bother at this point of the engines young life.

As far as dugs go, mine died 3 weeks ago so ahm still grievin. Pit yer dug wherever it wants whilst ye still have it. Life is too short.

Scotland tae whack Italy 4-0
