Rear Brakes Not Releasing

The rear brakes on my RAV4 are not releasing unless I reverse the car. Has anybody any idea what is happening?. Could it be the master cylinder?

Welcome to the TOC, Chamings

I'm no expert by a long chalk but it sounds to me has if the pistons are seizing in your rear calipers. This could cause high pad wear and heat generation, plus a waste of fuel, dragging semi-always-on brakes around all the time.

A strip down and clean up job.

I'd look there first.....but this is just my very amateur opinion

Can you update your profile so we can see what RAV you have?

Is it the foot brake or hand brake?

PS I doubt it will be the master cylinder

Thanks for the input. Its an August 1997 reg and it mainly happens on application of the foot brake and occasionally with the hand brake.

Its a RAV4 GX Estate 2.0 petrol. It has been stored on a farm before I got it. Only done 41,000 miles. Found the air filter void full of acorns, is that a mod or a squirrels winter supply as an added extra.

Thanks

Thanks

The 4.2 and 4.2's have got "drum in hat" which basically means that the handbrake is inside the rear disc and therefor seperate to the foot brake.

It sounds like the 4.1's have conventional rear drum brakes for the sticking to effect both. They would probably benefit from a good clean out as it sounds like the shoes are sticking to the drum. Even the slightest traces of oil will cause them to stick but make sure the linkage is free while your in there. There are several 4.1 owners that can confirm the drum brakes????

Good luck

PS if you you evict the squirrel the engine won't run right :fox: (sorry no squirrel emoticon)
