I love it when coppers get techincal on me :P

i start talking techincal and they get so fed up of it they cant get rid of me fast enough.

"yea that bock box plays with your emmisions" well acutally PC Plod, its just a different type of silencer which controls the air in a different manner as it passes through, all the changes to what came out of my outlet valves were made further back through the exhaust system.... now if the back box was excessivley loud and unstable enough to cause an adverse effect on my knock sensor it may have had a small bearing on my performance, as the exact point of which pre igntion occurs will not have been found, so the perfect timing for my spark to occur cannot be so accuratley determined, therfore my back boxes has no bearing on my emmisions, except the excess emmisions produced from me booting it everwhere cus it sounds so good.

get back in your volvo you jobsworth

my old seat cordoba coupe failed the mot cause they said the exhaust was to loud!! a scoob wud ave been louder by miles!! it wasnt 1 of these steek wagons where it was using a bored out bin lid for an exhaust!! it was an ashley back box and sounded sweet!! they said it was noise pollution and i needed to put the standard exhaust on for it to pass the mot.

if the cops stop u for sayin its to loud tell them to get a db tester out then as their ears arent a good enuf test!! u are perfectly within ur rite to say this as noisey neighbours cant b taken to court and fined b4 noise levels have been measured and recorded!! why shoud it be any different for ur car? do not accept a fine for it!! i doubt ur exhaust cud be classed as excessive and if it is they wud be askin u to change it and not just for the 30 quid to pay for their xmas do!!

it different for northern ireland. we need to go to mot centres instead of just approved garages! lol its a bit of a joke that supercars can pass a mot not probs when they are loud as <I thought I could get past the swearing filter - what a sad muppet I am eh?>! but u change ur exhaust to get a better note out of it (still a fraction of the noise out of a super car) and you can fail? how does that 1 work!!

in new zealand the cops use a db tester. some system like at the MOT test it has to be under 98 db, but if it fails it has to be reduced to 92 dB

Ive been looking up recently about being stopped excessivly by the police. You have to have the guts but my research found that if you start taking notes on a pad noting the time, date, officers names, officers numbers i.e bb1085, their vehicle registration, they will soon leave you alone. Or something to that effect. Sorry to hear about your trouble though man!

If you were in the US and the police told you a part of your car was not legal you could probalby sue (in no particular order) the garage who fitted the part, the manufacturer of the part and any MOT tester who certified the car, as they have all made your car unroadworthy.

Don't the same rules as number plates apply, you can buy "show plates" as long as they are sold as such. But you cannot use them on the public highway. If you are sold an exhaust system and it does not state "not road legal" then how are you supposed to know.

The question is:

Is your exhaust too loud (legally)?

Be honest.

This doesnt really establish anything just as the coppers didnt establish anything. From whats been put there was no test of the db by certified equipment and therefore it was just the coppers subjective opinion. Although the police are agents of the justice system they are not/should not be the arbiters. If the op believes his exhaust is not 'too loud' he should contest the fine and let it go further. This copper was a div for issuing a fine with no supporting 'evidence'.

We are innocent in this country until PROVEN guilty.... and by my reckoning one coppers "but i believe its too loud" does not constitute proof that it is 'too loud'.

Surely in order to fine you they would need to prove it was too loud??

A cop saying it is without proving it, is not enough to enforce a fine.

I would dispute the fine.

mate i know how u feel.

Back in the day wen i had my colt i had a full decat exhaust from a 4-1 manifold with a Hks hi power back box.. and believe me that was LOUD.. from the moment i got it i never came across a car louder than mine barring one scooby..

one day i was driving it along and i got pulled over by the police and the reason y he pulled me over was because my exhaust was "excesively loud".. i asked him how could he tell as he had no proof or evidence given the fact that he did not have db machine on him. His reply was

" i tell you wat if you want to get smart with me then i will tow your car and get it tested and if fails for any reason then it will be crushed"

i knew that he couldnt do that but at the same time i could be bothered to argue as i was in a rush..

after that point i asked him for his name and Badge number..and he automatically changed his tune!

he goes to me ill give to option "a fine" or a "producer to get an mot test"

because i new a local garage and i knew getting an mot stamp was easy i took the later.

but it just goes to show PIGS are foolish!!! but dont give in mate.. honestly!

yep just contest anything they dont have proof of. i once got pulled for 'allegedly' exceeding the speed limit. after asking the officer where his proof was all he could say was i followed you and you were over, at which i ask if he was going to give me a ticket or not as i had things to do. needless to say he told me to be on my way and watch my speed :P

Hey in my nissan i get pulled over most day. Using a 5 piece harness they look for the strap. Walking up to the window saying "so why are you not weari........., Can i see you licence and docs please hehe" prob is they then spend 30 min lloking over my car. But in my celica, i have changed the exhaust, but it gives a lower deeper growl, so it does not gives as much high pitched sound as some. Only been pulled over by the cops, all being nice and all inspecting my MK 5 heaven.
