CAR WENT IN FOR ITS 40 000 MILE SERVICE TODAY AND WAS DUE 2 NEW RUN FLAT TYRES. TOLD TOYOTA DO NOT DO THE RUN FLAT WHEEL EXCHANGE NO MORE. SOME DEALERS NOW HAVE THE EXPENSIVE FANCY TYRE CHANGING MACHINES. NOT MY DEALER WITH 3 TOYOTA FRANCHISES. I WILL HAVE TO GO 30-50 MILES FROM THE SMALL "VILLAGE" OF EDINBURGH TO GET TYRES CHANGED!!! AND BY THE SOUNDS OF IT GET ROBBED BY THE DEALER IN THE PROCESS. MY GARAGE COULD NOT GIVE ME A PRICE THO' I WAS TOLD IT COULD COST JUST OVER £300 AT ONE OF THE DEALERS THAT I WOULD HAVE TO TRAVEL TO. MY DEALER HAS SOME alloys THEY ARE THINKING OF PUTTING RUN FLATS ONTO AND KEEPING IN STOCK FOR BACK UP.

ANYWAY I WILL HAVE TO DO MORE RESEARCH ON PRICING ETC, BEFORE I GO OFF THE DEEP END WITH TOYOTA. BUT JUST WONDERED IF ANYONE HAD ANYMORE INFO OR EXPERIENCES WITH THE DISATER KNOWN AS RAV T180 RUN FLAT TYRES?

WILL KEEP YOU POSTED IF I FIND OUT ANY MORE. :ffs: :wheelchair:

Quite a few T180 owner's had noticed this problem, usually after suffering a puncture. At least it seems you got your money's worth out of the original tyres.

Below is a link to one of the many threads about runflat tyres and punctures etc. If you do a search I'm sure you'll find the other threads but the bottom line is it's an expensive time consuming job that even the Toyota dealer's don't like doing. Sorry.

As Fuj has said, if you do a search, you'll find that it's been discussed afew times before.

£300!! That's a bit more than i had to pay. I think mine was £200 +vat and they had the car for a whole day!!

The run flat tyre exchange scheme was in place while Toyota looked for centres to buy the very expensive equipment required to change the tyres. There are now sufficient centres in place for Toyota to stop the exchange scheme. The tyres are available to purchase, and whilst not every centre has a machine, you should be able to get it done (in your case with a 30-50 mile trip) We keep a tyre WITH wheel in stock, because if the donut ring or wheel is damaged, you will have to replace the whole wheel, the retail price is £315.55!

I hope you manage to get sorted out, you are not being "robbed" by your dealer as you put it, they are advising you of the price charged by Toyota for a wheel/tyre combo, we don't make up the prices, but we take the flack when the s :censor: hits the Toyota encrusted fan, but as mentioned previously, you can now get tyres replaced, which was not the case not very long ago

I know nothing about these tyres as i don't have them. However, the guy I use for all my tyres and wheels for all my assorted cars is Ian at Autoimage in Glasgow. He has a link or depot in Edinburgh too. I use him cos he knows his stuff and prices well. If he can help, he will. Or he might know someone else that can - 0141 333 0575 is his number and you can say that Ian Strachan told you.

Kegs,

I think the dealers are getting confused. You can replace the tyre only, if it's any help, I've been quoted £145 + VAT for 1 tyre.... (try not to spit your drink onto your computer  ) There would, I imagine, be a service charge to fit them as well!

Instead of Children in Need, maybe we could have "Rav 4 T180 owners in need of a new tyre in need" :D

No confusion here  I did say you can change the tyre on its own, but a wheel AND tyre is £315.55 You will also be charged a fitting fee for a tyre only, they are a pig to fit........but we are going over old ground on that one

Do you have access to a costco card, I just bought 4 michelin tyres for £99.70 each + £2 fitting per tyre, they have a promotion on until 25/11 where you get £30 rebate on a purchase of 4 michelin tyres, mine is an XT5 with a spare so they're not run flat but they do say they can get any tyre supplied by michelin to order, service is 2nd to none, they even fill them with gas rather than air in the price,

Costco is a trade warehouse though membership is open to certain groups as well, NHS, police, fire service etc

I buy my tyres from Ian at Autoimage for much less. Then I don't buy Pirellis so can't comment on that, but I recommend him to anyone I know cos he's a good guy, helpful and has excellent prices. I wouldn't think of going anywhere else as he beats any quotes easily.

he supplied the MAK MIrrors on the RAV for less than £600 for 5 wheels n tyres. Well I think that was what it was.

I think the problem we're having as T180 owners is the need to have Bridgestone tyres (maybe Kingo can tell us if there are any other makes available for the T180) and the specialist equipment required to remove the tyres from the wheel. I'm yet to find any independent places that will touch them :( (if anyone finds one near Reading, please let me know :) )

What hasn't been mentioned possibly, is the fact that tyre suppliers will NOT supply run flat tyres to any Toyota dealer OR tyre centre that has not had certified training from Bridgestone. So if none of the staff have training certificates then they can't get run flat tyres let alone fit them. It would be better to bully your local Mr T dealer to get a member of staff trained to do the job!!! Having watched our Mr T trained run flat tyre fitter change a tyre on one of these wheels, it is not suprising that the tyre, inner ring and labour time is expensive. These tyres are a real battle to get on and off and require additional machinery fitted to a tyre changing machine. From memory our price of a tyre is approx £146+ vat and the possibility of replacing the "inner ring" if it is damaged £100+ vat plus 1.5 hrs labour and a valve and balance. If you can still get the exchange wheel, then it is approx £277+ vat. DO NOT even think of putting standard tyres on a run flat wheel as a cheap alternative. If you have an accident caused by trying this and your insurance company find out....god help you and anyone else involved in our litigious days. Buy another set of normal wheels and tyres. The price of this "new" to Toyota customers technology is currently high and will no doubt fall as more people are trained and the competition hots up to supply this service.

Keith ;)

P.S. is Watford near Reading?

Sitting in the shadows watching all this all I can say is what the hell were they thinking about?

Why on earth have they introduced such an operating nightmare to what is otherwise superb vehicle? (with perhaps a little question mark on keyless locking).

Come on Mr T get rid of these prohibitive tyres, I'm sure owners will know from the hidious TPWS that they have got a problem and then they can fit the space saver or completely kn@cker the tyre with some aerosol kak.

What a choice!

Anchorman i couldnt agree more, Mr T has abandoned customers to find tyre dealers who can fit their run flats. I know the argument that no one should be more than 30 mile saway from a dealer who can do it. I've got normal tyres on my XT4 (I say normal, i'll come back to that one in a minute) which means i ve got about 10 tyre dealers within a 5 mile radius of my house, hence competition hence a better deal. If your the only dealer withing 30 miles of someone and you know it you can get away with charging what you like.

Normal tyres, well they're 225/65/17's. Only two manufacturers make this size (that i can find) hence a lack of competition, choice and supply problems.

Come on Toyota put some tyres on which are a regular size, its 4 wheel drive vehicle, what if i want some snow tyres or something with a more agressive tread pattern.

Yeah, have to agree, I wish there was a wider choice with tyres for the RAV.

When it comes time to change them (hopefully not for a good while yet), I wouldn't mind trying something else...maybe from Michelin.....but at present I think we're limited to Bridgestone and Yokohama.

I started this topic in December 2006 when first looking at new Rav. As i said a couple of times on forum this year i am off road most weekends and often have to travel from north of scotland, the borders, lake district or wales back to ayrshire late on sat or sun, for this reason i discounted T180 and XT5. The lower levels do not have cruise which due to medical problem is an essential.

I HOPE Toyota sort this out as i am due to replace 4-2 XTR early next year and would love to have T180.

My 2007 CRV 2.2 iCDTi ES is doing nicely but was in at Toyota dealer recently and was back out in T180 and YES YES.

The sales manager knows my thoughts and he himself coud not beleive it when 4.3 XTR came without cruise as 4.2 did have. This was before spare was deleted from range.

Yes and as nearly all of the functionality is provided by the engine management ECU, it should be quite cheap for Mr T. to add I would think.

I get the feeling we would have seen loads more T180's out on the road if:

  1. The purchase price was lower.......say £25,000.
  2. The T180 came with spare tyre..........even a space saver. People don't like runflats!

Out of curiosity, which Michelin tyre did you get? I'd love the option to get Synchrones on my XT4 when the Yoko's wear out (on current running, that looks like it could be in the spring) but they're not yet quoting 225/65/17 for that range on their website (at least, not that I've been able to find). Interestingly, they do have 225/65/17/102T in their winter (Latitud Alpin) range.

They fitted Michelin Latitude Tour HP but my wheels are 16" not 17"

Wot a shower o winghers. When the RAV came oot in the UK in 1994, the only tyre available at the size was a Dunlop at £200 !!!! Then the steel wheels bent if ye hit a chucky in the road.....

Nae choice. Nae alternative.

Nuthing.

So Mr T is well used tae fleecing customers.

The same happened wi the Previa in the same year. £200 a tyre

An ahm talking 1994 - 13 years ago!!!

Little wunner I changed alloys tae non T an got a better range of tyres....and of course noo ahm running 18" alloys, its getting as difficult to choose a tyre as it is tae pick a pizza frae the supermarket.

Changed days eh?? Specially when the cost has plummeted.

RAVS are no jist fur Christmas Campaign

Good point Bothy , just occured to me after watching Top gear on Sunday and reading your post, when Mr Benz (or whoever you believe ) invented the first car ,where did they get the tyres from. Must have been a bit slack being a Kwick Fit (other tyre suppliers are available) fitter waiting for the car to be invented. Richie.
