New Rav T180 Wont Start

i just parked up outside got out the rav and pressed the button on the handle but the doors wouldnt lock. So i got back in and pressed the start button and the car flashed no key detected. So i went in the house and got my wifes key and the same problem, anyone know what it could be please?

I've found the keyless start/stop can be a little temperamental if you have the key in the pockets of thick jackets or fleeces. I've found that once the car has lost detection, pressing the lock then unlock buttons on the key fob seems to reset it all! :unsure:

Yes i just tried that and the car starts, which i think means the Battery has gone. But both fobs at the same time is very strange i think?

Maybe not, when you press the buttons, can you see the red led lighting up through the key case? If you can, chances are the batteries are OK.

In which case I would suspect either the remote locking receiver or a local transmitter blocking problem.

Hi fatskater, My wife had the same problem happen to her one night when she pop into a local shop, when she came out our XT5 would not start. She thought the same as you that the Battery in the fob was flat and phone my son to bring the spare fob which had never been used, this would not start the car either. she tried the local retail park for a new Battery, but like Manxrav on a previous thread could not find a spare Battery. She returned to the car 1 hour later and tried again this time it did start.

The next day she phoned Toyota Service department and explained what happened, as the car was only a year old he didn't think it was the fob battery, but said that if someone in the area was using CB radio, it could block the fob's radio wave. :huh: :huh:

This is possible as I have had the fob in the same pocket as my mobile phone, and has stopped me from openning the car.

The 2 local toyota parts departments did not stock the batteries.

I purchased 50 batteries for eBay for under £10 and changed both fobs. :crybaby: :crybaby:

If it is a blocking problem like Jim describes, one thing you could try is getting the key fob very close to the remote locking receiver and then press the fob buttons. The remote locking receiver is located close to the rear edge of the right hand side triangular "boot window" I *think*.

This is not guaranteed to work, but without going into technicalities (unless you want me to!) it gives the receiver a better chance of hearing the key when interference/blocking is present.

When the key is close to the ignition switch, I believe the communication with the key is via a "low frequency" path (probably 125kHz) which is short range, but less susceptible to blocking. When unlocking the vehicle, comms from the key is via UHF (probably around 433.92MHz or around 868MHz) I believe.

It seems to work everywhere but outside my house. They are doing some work at the bottom of the road, and have automatic traffic lights. Maybe theyre the problem ill see if it works when theyve gone.

I'd be interested in knowing what happens when they've gone.

If the lights are are using a radio link, they may be using a frequency of something like 458MHz. Now if the key uses 433MHz and if Mr T's receiver design is not that great, then yes, this could be your problem.

Bear in mind that these key receivers are not the best performing bits of radio ever built :rolleyes: , the total cost is probably a few £ only and for that it has to be quite sensitive and operate over a wide temperature range (-40C to +85C probably).
