1200 Rpm Tick-over - 2.0 D4-d

I have a May 2007 registered Avensis Tourer T3x 2.0 D-4D which, since the weather has become colder over the last 2-3 weeks, has an idle speed of 1200 RPM when cold.

The intersting factor is this - there is a half-mile downward stretch just 1/4 mile for my home and when I put the car in neutral ( yes - I know - it's not my normal practice!!!) and coast down, when the engine is cold the idle speed settles at 1000 RPM - which does not appear to be unusual when the engine is cold and no doubt running on choke. However, the moment the car comes to an actual stop the idle speed immediately rises to 1200 RPM. This situation goes on for the usual 6-7 miles of through-town driving necessary for the car to reach normal working temperature when the idle speed then is 800 RPM.

QUESTION:-

Can anyone advise me if their 2.0 D4-D Avensis does the same - i.e. is this normal - as I don't want to go to the hassle of booking the car in overnight for a cold start test if it is?

hello berti

do you have the heater or a/c on when this happens, this is normal if you have, and also you will notice that your car will accelerate more when the weather is cold

(turbo chargers love cold weather) downside is more fuel consumption

hope this helps

as matty says, the higher idle is just due to the heater settings. switch it off and it should drop.

Thanks for the advice guys - much appreciated!

Hi Bertie,

I have noticed exactly the same behaviour. I cannot remember whether the heating has been on when this happens, but it is exactly as you describe it. As other people have said it is normal due to low temperatures.

Cheers

Thanks John

It's just as Matty and Chandler have said, although I never realised it until they did so!

Just press the "off" button on the heater controls and the idle speed drops right down to normal, even when the engine is very cold after first starting in the morning - very strange - don't know what the thinking is behind it or why it seems to be linked to some sort of sensor that detects when the car is stationary!!

Still - as all of our cars seem to be rehaving exactly the same then it must be normal.

Cheers

Bertie
