Front Tyre Wear - Outside Edge

My Avensis Tourer has done 5800 miles - of that probably about half is town work and half motorway.

I've noticed that the outside edges of the front tyres are wearing noticeably. A local tyre specialist, with pretty much state of the art alignment equipment, has checked the alignment and can find nothing in that direction which would cause the wear which they say is slight but certainly noticeable. The only thing they can suggest is that maybe it is down to the power steering.

I'm interested to know if anybody else is experiencing the same as with the 17" "lowish" profile tyres fitted to the Avensis now, I suspect that they will be a pretty penny to replace!

The Tyre Specialist suggested that I consider rotating them crossways-front-to-back at some stage to even up the wear.

Cheers

Bertie

I found the tyres on the Avensis used to wear at an uneven rate despite having the alignment checked and wheels balanced I think it may be an Avensis thing but I am sure other people will post !!! I also found the mileage I achieved from the tyres were very poor

I have the same observation here. Mr. T. said everything is oerfectly aligned and yet the outer edges of front tyres (equally on both tyres) are significantly worn compared with the ineer edges.

I was given the explanation that the previous ownre must have driven the car at high speed when turnining around.

Sadly this is one of the downsides to power steering and it happens to 90% of cars, some more so than others. I bet that the left side will be slightly worse than the right, this is because we turn right more often than we turn left... roundabouts always make us go right... and moost of the weight of the car goes to the left side. The faster you take corners the heavier this wear can be.

It is true to say that rotating the tyres corner to corner can prolong the life of the tyres, but this can only be done with by-directional tyres as directional tyres would end up facing the wrong way... in this case simple swapping front to back will help a little.
