Just Picked Up My Tourer

traded in my avensis hatch and got a new tourer. i have a couple of questions to ask, if someone knows the answers i would be grateful

i had the protection pack and it comes with mudguards. i noticed that they hold apart the rear bumper slightly just where it meets the wheel arch. i have raised this with the dealer and he reckons it is the mudguard fittings that, coupled with the extra weight, are pulling down the rear bumper producing the gap. is this the case?. i might put a piccy up to show you - it might explain better.

do you still get that plastic thingy with the key number on as i havent got mine with the keys?

thanks for your help

Funny you should ask about the plastic tag with the key number on it, i took delivery of my T180 tourer about a fortnight ago after P/xing my last landcruiser lc4, all the cruisers that i have changed yearly has been the only vehicles that i did not get the tag with, i now have my new car which the service key had the the plastic tag attached "so they are available" i personally feel that its down to the dealer whom you dealt with if or not you get the tag.

Re the proctection pack i also had mine supplied and fitted, but not noticed the rear bumper, will take a look in the morning when its a little lighter now you have mentioned it.

A piccy will help to clarifie the area you speak of.

When I collected my TR Hatch a couple of week's back I was given 2 master keys and one sub key I think its called, together with a metal tag stating the key number.

With regard to the protection pack, I only had the parking sensors and mud flaps fitted since I declined the boot liner and rear bumper protection plate.

Just the normal gap showing on mine thankfully.

thanks for the replies so far. i have added some pics of the mudguard situation. it is pitch black tonight but i think you can see what i mean. i guess that there is an issue with the gap but how do i stand with taking the car to a different dealer to sort out for me. i am concerned that as the pack is a dealer fitted addition i have no chance of getting this sorted. the dealer told me there is nothing wrong and all avensis with mudguards are the same. it is a shame i am having these issues early on as the car is far better than the older avensis. it is quieter and less jolty over the bumps. i went to birmingham today on its first proper run and the cruise control makes loads of difference.

thanks

matt

Extra weight of the mudgards :D They're 'avin a giraffe aren't they. Are these the solid gold mudflaps option then.

Not sure how you stand with getting dealer fit problems fixed elsewhere. I'd ask the dealer, and see whether the thought of you investigating that option makes them take notice.

Some pics of similar cars with mudgards fitted and no gaps might help.

If none of that works then I'd ask for them to be removed; you wouldn't have bought them if you'd known they'd cause this problem and the dealer arguably should have warned you that their massive weight was going to be too much for the feeble bumper fixings to cope with. Presumably once they're off then the bumper will be able to support its own weight once more.

Good luck.

Have a look on the dealers forecourt and see if any of the cars on there have had the flaps added and how they look on that car ??? if different to yours point it out

I did not get chance today to look at my tourer, but in the morning i am making a point of going to take a look at my car and see if i have got the same problem with my mudgaurds which was just fitted with the protection pack deal about 2/3 weeks ago, i'll get my camera out and take some pics.

Hope i have not got the problem because it will be straight back to the dealers if i have, its only got 530 miles 0n the clock.

Hi, just took these pics of my rear bumper/mudgaurds showing mud flaps both sides.

There is a slight gap but i think its not that noticable, hope this gives you an idea of a comparison to your vehicles bumper gap, if you are unhappy about the gap which doe's look bigger than mine shown above then i would not even think about taking your car back to anyone other than the dealership who fitted the flaps also i would take the issue up with the body shop manager normally based at the dealership.

PS

Have you had the call yet from customer care ? If not tell them that you are not happy with the fitting and take it up with them, they do not like any bad reports.

Your flaps look a bright grey, mine are black to match the inner wing colour.

hi guys

thanks for the replies. pat2u your car looks as i would have expected mine to have. it is a good point about the colour, i hadnt noticed although the colour matches in with the lower trim on the bottom of the bumper so i guess yours is black and mine is a grey.

today i took my car to a different dealer who said that something was not right. they have taken some photos and are going to get in touch with toyota to see what to do. apparently the parking sensors are fitted before delivery to the dealership by a 3rd party. the dealer i went to tonight thinks there may be a possibility that the sensor fitting company may have hit/moved/whatever the rear bumper.

this morning i got a call from the dealer cust service asking what the problems were although she already knew. she ended the conversation basically telling me that when the cust satisfaction survey comes remember that i had good service before collection and that to put down i was now disatisfied was unfair and the salesman would get into trouble. i couldnt beleive what i was hearing. they arent bothered about me being satisfied they are only interested in getting points off this survey. when the survey comes i will be adding what has been said in that conversation as well.

Just a thought.

Behind the bumper, if my memory serves me right there are a row of button type stud that clips to the body of the car and in turn the bumper then clips to them holding it firmly in situ, i can recall once having a slight rear end shunt "more of a push" which did not do any damage to the rear except for a few scratches to the paintwork but however it did shove the bumper forward making the gap that you now see on your vehicle apparent, so i guess now that you have discussed this with another garage they are now thinking on the lines of a possible small shunt to the rear and the button studs are either broken or not fitting correctly near the wheel arches and need replacing to lift the bumper back up to the correct holding position to align it back in situ.

i asked the question to the original dealer and said that if it had happened on the transporter then why are they so unwilling to help. it is one of those things, change the bumper and we dont need to speak about the matter again. they wouldnt and the story is as i have described. i carnt explain how bad the service has been since i collected the car. i have had the salesman ring me and want the car to go back to them but i have refused, he then slams the phone down on me. like i want my car to go back to them!!.

  • 2 weeks later...

got a call from the garage today and toyota have looked at the photos and apparently there are some clips which attach the bumper and these are slightly bigger than they need to be which in turn hold the bumper apart. they are going to swap the bumper.

What a sad tale

The bumper is only held on by a series of clips etc, it is removed to fit the parking sensors at the PDI centre, if it's not fitted properly your dealer could just re-fit it or replace it under warranty, I just don't know why they are jibbing at fixing it

The CES survey (customer experience survey) is there so that you can have your say.

Kingo

exactly what i thought. the thing is it probably was nothing to do with the garage which is why i carnt beleive they would just change it for me. accroding to the other dealer it is made slightly out of tolerance. the minute i took it to the other dealer they said that something was wrong and would take the piccys. 3 days later and they are back on the phone saying it will be changed. which is what i would have expected the place i bought it from to do. i am fair enough and expect that a machine with thousands of components will have a few niggles but i then expect them to be sorted straight away without me having to do any leg work.

to be honest though i had heard that this dealer was bad but it thought i could buy my car from them (as they were cheapest) and run. my plan has faltered a bit :)

i havent had the survey through yet. should i have expected it by now? it has been 3 weeks.

As Parts King says, the rear bumper sides are held on with plastic bumper retainer strips. If the bumper was removed to fit the parking sensors the front most part could have snapped. If the dealership knows this is the case they are probably fobbing you off with that excuse while they order the new parts in ready to fit when you take it back.

The mudflap weight is complete rubbish and you should have laughed in their face! It seems alot of sales people have a problem with telling the truth :)

Mart.
