Should be picking up my Rav4 2.2 D4D XTR Thursday morning :D

Is there anything I should check, or look for when collecting it?

Not really - just make sure anything you negotiated like mats and mudflaps are on. It sounds daft but you could dip the oil. There were some reports of it being low soon after collection so let them put a litre in at £10. It will run much quieter and give slightly better mpg with high grade diesel in it but expect to pay 5 - 10p per litre more.

Check the tyre pressures when you get it home. Mine were quite high and it was stiff as a board. Proper pressure is 2.2 bar but I run mine at 2 as it is rarely loaded with much more than me and anchorwoman. Check you have your wheel nut lock key.

Things that will miff you at first;

  • Speedo calibrated in multiples of 20
  • Cant tell if the lights are on (even with that little green warning light) so turn the dimmer down a bit.
  • Some switches not illuminated
  • Stupid boot light arrangement
  • No aux input on radio
  • Expect 1st and 2nd gear to be notchy and don't tell us if it isn't because we'll be jealous.
  • Handbrake will come a long way up (I will show how to adjust it as soon as I get chance)
  • Don't sound the horn at the neighbours when you pull up for the first time or they will fall about laughing.
  • Cup holders designed for US bucket sized cups.
  • Mirrors may rattle so look up the fix in the maintenance bits.

Other warnings

    • Put the daft little ash tray in the garage until you sell it so that you won't have to kill anyone who lights up.
    • Parking in the middle of the Sahara Desert won't stop there being two knackered old LRs glued to each side of it when you get back
    • It WILL drizzle when you get it so it will be nicely kakked up by the time you get home to amuse the neighbours with the horn.
    • Check the oil as above then weekly until you get used to consumption. Some use more than others. Mine has done 10k and seems to have just about stopped now. If you wreck the engine with no oil it will be at your expense (there is a low oil warning light but it will be awkward if you are in the middle of nowhere).
    • Check that your chair is close to your lounge window because you will want to keep looking at it stood on your drive.

I'm sure you will be absolutely thrilled so enjoy!

Also adding to Anchorman's list.

Ask the salesman where the spare tyre is

Thanks for the tips.

I will keep an eye on the oil level. My previous car was an RX8 so I am used to doing that :D

Just looked at the weather forecast, and you are right, it does look like it will be wet!!

The silly thing I did was to take my trade in early to get a better price on it. Now I have no way of getting to the garage to pick up my new car. Looks like I will have to get a taxi. Doh!

Well after a week, looking down your list,

Speedo calibration in 20mph intervals has not bothered me too much.

I better not mention my gear change 1st to 2nd :D

The handbrake does come up quite a way.

The boot light is useless. Why did they put it in the door?

Aux input on the radio would have been nice. I wonder why it isn't there.

I still haven't tried the horn !!

I have removed the ash tray, as it looks a bit naff.

There does seem to be a rattle from the passenger side direction, quite intermittent though?

When it is wet, and I open the rear boot door, water seems to come in and land on the load cover.

Its nice and comfortable though, I'm getting 47mpg average, and it looks good.

Takes some cleaning though! Reaching the middle top of the windscreen is a stretch!!

Overall very impressed.

Glad you're enjoying it Matthew

I found the 4.2 to be worse in that respect, which I think was mainly due to the "spoiler" on the top.

Being a shorta*se I have to stand on something to clean the roof. Usually a honka driver if I can find one.

Nah, I have a box. I must be trying to compensate for something driving a RAV  :D

I normally stand on the rear wheels to do the roof....

Yep and opening the rear door on a 4.2 with spoiler does tend to get you wet...and if you place up the rear cover not firmly enough it crashes down on your head...so not only slightly wet but also bruised :boxed:

Na Honka's as Fuji has mentioned before, our used for nappy disposal units, if any of the windows or sunroof are open....

I bet you that's the door mirror!

Ah, Child Refuse Vehicle

and any smart child would proabably refuse to go anywhere near one.

Oh, no :o (what I really want here is a emoticon that sticks its fingers in its ears and explodes like they used to do in the lemmings game) I posted that TLA, did I get away with it?
