Engine Oil Consumption (again!)

The old oil problem has caught me out too. im using about 2L per 1000 miles. The engine appears to be working fine, no terrible noises, loss of power, good MPG (370 miles to a tank). There seems to be a bit excess white smoke on startup, havent a clue what that means, any suggestions??? engine knackered!??! i'm just lucky that i check the oil quite often before this started happening that it hasn't run out.

I just brought it into Toyota today and they put me on the 1000 mile oil consumption test. My car is a 2001 celica vvti with 62K. Think im knackered on the warrenty issue as i dont have a FSH which they are looking for. the chap said he would need one to put a case to Toyota Ireland who are offering the warrenty, otherwise he doesnt know what they will say, prob "get lost"!!

I'm gonna have to go hunting for some Service history if i am gonna have any look of a engine replacement or to fix it.

Dont really fancy a bill of 1000's to get it fixed!!!

I suppose its good to see they are offering they 7 year engine warrenty in ireland too.

hrm,

i always thought white smoke was the cylinder head gasket had gone and the oil was mixing with the coolant from the heaters causing a white smoke

has your engine been running any hotter than normal,

Don't think the white smoke is anything to worry about, given the time of year... Mine's a bit heavy on the exhaust fumes for the first 5 mins, billowing out white smoke at times, and has done in the cold ever since i brought it. I too have a small oil prob - 2l per 10,000 miles, but I don't have any getting in to any other liquids that I've noticed.

Do follow other people's advice though, and check all your other liquids & oil filler area for white scummy stuff for signs of a head gasket failure...

And sorry to hear the cars a bit buggered - hope its sorted soon and ain't too expensive. If it looks like its going to go over a thousand or so, you may want to look in to getting the block from a rear-ended facelift Celica, which doesn't suffer from these problems (or at least not yet!)

well the coolant is perfect, nice bright red. it was changed about 10,000 miles ago and hasnt changed colour so no problems there. there is no scum around the oil cap or if you look inside the engine from the oil filler, no scum there. I've seen that on other cars, doesnt look healthy at all! so as they are fine i doubt the headgasket is gone. the engine doesnt appear to be running any hotter, how would you know it is apart from looking at the water temperature gauge?? my old pug 206 XSI had a oil temp gauge which was handy! The white smoke only really appears at start up for a few seconds and then it goes away, interesting its happening to others at much lower oil consumption.

well at the moment if toyota dont fix it under warrenty which they probably wont, i dont think i would bother getting a new engine at the moment as i just need to keep topping up the oil every 2 weeks considering it is running fine. i'll look at the option of getting it fixed if it can be, thought it was something to do with the engine block being too soft and wearing away at the pistons, which im sure cant be fixed????

just gotta hope it doesnt get any worse, if it does then a replacement engine may be sought!

I think there is a company in ireland that puts a second hand engine in form japan, god knows what condition it would be in though. they offer a 6 month warrenty, think is costs 1500 euro to do that.
