Rav4 Petrol Cap

Hi...

I am not sure what Rav 4 you have? I wondered about this if the remote lever should ever come adrift. I found that I could reach the activation lever from the rear of the internal storage box behind the cap filler... on my Rav (1998 3dr, MkII) there is just enough gap to get your hand in and pull the lever.

Mind you... if you can't get it open, think of the money you will save on fuel! :D

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to get the petrol cap open when the tab in the car footwell is not working ?

Hi,

Not sure which RAV you have but had a similar problem with my wife's old 4.1 a couple of years ago. It was'nt the remote lever but a small spring clip inside the filler compartment which flipped the flap open when the lever was actuated. This had broken therefore the flap stayed in place and gave the impression that there was a problem with the remote mechanism as obviously when you released the lever the flap locked again. Get someone to pull and hold up the tab in the footwell while you see if you can open the flab with a thin blade. If you can and it is the spring they are only a couple of bob from your local Mr T.

Hi Clive, many thanks for the reply.

My Rav is a 1998 GX and I found that by opening the storage compartment in the back and feeling round I could get the cable at the back of the puel cap and pull it. This opened my cap and I can now go places again. I will have to have it fixed though as it now does not lock shut. Good job it's flush to the car so it's not noticeable.

Thanks again KAW
