Smoke From D4d D-cat

Avensis 2.2 D-cat (t-180)

year 2006

53.000km

While engine is warming up - there is a period of 10-20 seconds (as far as I have noticed) when gray (but not black!) bad-smelling smoke is clearly seen. Usually it appears when engine is half-warm and on idle or low rpm. Adding rpm amount of smoke increases but disappears in max half a minute. No affect on engine power or performance. I put the car to maintenance, but only on end December...

Right after purchase I had a problem with cold engine start - disappeared after reinstalling ECU (kind of recall, they said).

Obviously there is some bugs left in this very nice D-cat version. Does not matter I like it so much, probably I will think for a while what car to choose a next one after 1.5 years (company car).

hello

the possible reasons are, as follows:

- clogging of air filter;

- ratio ----- air/fuel injected --check with sutter ;

- bug with control signal to each fuel valve pilot solenoid.

pls check with above.

hello again

i do not think that the additional problem might be with cat. convertor. Normaly it serves within 70k-80k.

i have refered to mine that was changed at 75k, but it is understood each convertor has own lifetime.

cheers/igor

  • 1 month later...

The problem was with air sensor - therefore the fuel/air proportion was wrong.

As it was colder and colder air every day - the less power I had (until engine got fully warm), and finnaly the system switched to check engine mode - only ~30% power left - and that happened this morning when -16C was outside!!! (not the best timing indeed...)

The issue is fixed now, we'll see if this really was the reason.

Hello.

I'm from Romania and a have an Avensis D-Cat from Germany, second hand.

I had same problems with my car and today i had changed the air sensor.

My question for you is if that was the really problem or something else.

Please responde me on luciancioara_arad@yahoo.com

I'll really thank you.
