Fault Code Reader Device And Software

The engine management light on my Rav4 NRG is currently on. I suspect that this is due to one of the injectors on the gas system playing up, but I want to check it out before I start replacing things.

Does anyone know of a cable and software that is available which would allow me to have a look at what the fault codes are?

Cheers! :thumbsup:

Hi fieldinsb, There is a thead already covering a similar question, about 3 pages back. Obd11 Reader For Diesel, Reader for D4D 2003.

This may help you or check Draper tools online they do a fault finding code reader for toyota/suzuki.

Cheers Jim

Hi...

Thanks for the link Anchorman. I telephoned 'talktomycar' with the intention of purchasing one of these 'U480' code readers (are we sure its not a secondhand U-Boat?). However the guy did not know if it was suitable for a UK Rav4... does anyone know if the UK (Japanese made) Rave4 is the made the same as the American Rav4 that uses OBD-II...? I presume your Rav4 is a UK model Anchorman and that it has OBD-II codes? The last thing I want to do is plug in the wrong device and fry the on-board vehicle electronics.

I think my 3dr Rav4 1998 2ltr petrol is probably OBD-II compatible, but just wanted confirmation....? Also, does anyone know where I would find the 16 pin socket on the vehicle to plug in the code reader?

I don't have any problems at the moment... but no dought one day the dash will light up! \@/ I also have a print out of fault codes I obtained from this forum some time ago. :)

Thanks.... DaveH

I can assure you that this U480 (CAN) reader works because thanks to Bilmak I now have one!

Dave

I dont think you can go wrong by plugging the code reader in, it just won't read if it isn't compatible but according to Bilmak it should be if it is manufactured after 1996.

It definitely is compatible with mine because I plugged it in and scrolled all through the various menus. At the price its not the end of the world anyway. The plug on mine is very visible right by the bonnet pull but until I can have a butchers at my mates 4.2 all I can say is it should be mounted within 16 inches of the centre of the steering column.

No subs anywhere in sight!

On a 4.2 it is under the dash near the drivers door. Large white connector , you can't miss it.

Excellent! Many thanks for everyone's advice.

I have been doing some further investigation on this line and have turned up a Snap-On version. It's compatible with the majority of vehicles in the market today, and will also be able to diagnose issues with other systems such as ABS and Airbags. However, at about £2000 it's not exactly what one would call "cheap".

I wondered if there are just software tools available which would do the same thing? What I am thinking is that I would need to purchase the cable (USB to OBD-II) and a suitable laptop seperately but it "may" work out cheaper. A mate and I are looking at buying something between us and are just trying to find out what all of the options are before spending out on something.

Any advice that the masses may be able to supply would be gratefully received.

Cheers!! :thumbsup:

Aghhh, thanks pmb... I did not know my Rav4 was a 4.2 (never could figure these designation numbers?) I alway describe it as a Mk2 :unsure:

Ok, I did have a quick look round the dash area today by the steering wheel (I read somewhere that the socket should be with-in 16" of the steering column! Why?). I could not find it! It's wet and dark outside now... so I will have another look tomorrow where you have suggested... I did find some relays behind the side kick panel sometime ago when I fitted a towbar and had to change the standard flasher unit for a heavy duty type, perhaps its there? Hehe, I could not find the flasher unit at first... so I switched the indicators on and tracked down the 'click' from the flasher unit! :)

Just looking back at the thread , if it is 1998 then it is a 4.1 . Have a look at the american or Oz forums as they differenciate between the models that way. It has to be within 16 inches of the wheel as that is part of the OBD-II spec. It could also be behind a glove box that needs to be removed.

Thanks Anchorman, your a gem. So I figure I have a... Rav4 - 4.1 Mk2 1998 3dr Sports edition. Blimey, the title is longer than the vehicle! :P

DaveH

PS. Still not located the OBD-II 16 pin socket... but still looking.

Just had a look for the sockets on the 4.2 and 4.3.

They are - 4.2

Just to the left of the bonnet pull but set back a little;

4.3 - just to the left of the bonnet pull and right at the front making it very accessible;

Can somebody locate and photograph a 4.1 please?
