Transmission Unit Change

I recently had the transmission unit changed for my 2002 corolla. Now my fuel economy has gone down by 4-5 mpg. I used to manage 43-44 mpg and now it is 38-39 mpg. is that normal, i woudl expect the fuel economy to improve with a newer unit. What kind of economy should u expect from a 2002 1.6l petrol corolla hatchback. I do mostly motorway mileage.
